ARCHIVED: Support for FY 2000 Appropriations for GPO

PrintEmail

June 2, 1999

BACKGROUND:

House members are out until June 7th on their Memorial Day recess, but they left without passing the FY 2000 legislative branch appropriations bill, H.R. 1905. The Public Printer had requested a total of $128.5 million for FY 2000, including $31.2 million for the Federal Depository Library Program. As passed by the legislative branch subcommittee and the full House appropriations committee, H.R. 1905 includes a substantially lower level of funding for the Government Printing Office--$107.7 million--and for the FDLP--$29.9 million.

To make matters potentially worse, a small group of House members has stalled passage of many of the appropriations bills because they seek additional cuts across the board. A further decrease to GPO's budget request will negatively impact the depository library program and substantially reduce other key GPO services. We must not let that happen.

ACTION:

Please contact your representative's office during this week's recess, describe the importance of the GPO Access system and the depository library program to his/her constituents, and urge them not to allow any further decrease to GPO's budget of $107.7 million for FY 2000. Thank you!
