Approved April 1994, Board Meeting, Tab 32

At its meeting on April 30, 1994, the American Association of Law Libraries Executive Board determined that the AALL will accept two types of placement listings. The first section will include positions at institutions that have adopted or pursue policies not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or sexual orientation in the employment of librarians and staff. Following these listings will be a separate category for law schools having a religious affiliation or purpose that wish to exercise their rights under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution to apply employment policies related to that affiliation or purpose. These provide a preference for persons adhering to the religious affiliation or purpose of the law school, but shall not be applied to preclude applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or sexual orientation. Any law school so exercising its Constitutional right shall make available to the AALL Placement Committee and to interested applicants information explaining the religious beliefs, values, and practices of the institution so that informed decisions about whether to apply are possible.

Institutions using AALL placement services shall approve the listing of their position(s) under one of the following categories.

  1. This institution has adopted or pursues policies not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or sexual orientation in the employment of librarians and staff.
  2. This institution has chosen to avail itself of its right under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution to apply employment policies related to a religious affiliation or purpose. These provide a preference for persons adhering to the religious affiliation or purpose of the law school, but shall not be applied to preclude applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or sexual orientation.
