The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) has received second-year funding from Boston-based legal publisher Little, Brown and Company for continued support of the Association's Research Grant Agenda. One or more grants will be awarded by the AALL Research Advisory Committee in 1997. One or more grants totaling $20,000--25,000 will be provided to support the study of legal research.
The Little, Brown and Company grant will fund one or more projects of practical value to a large segment of those professions that create, disseminate or use legal and law-related information. Little, Brown and Company views its contribution as an investment in research that will provide a prospective look at the role of librarians, researchers and legal information providers and will yield results to which publishers can respond. The goal is to sponsor research that will have a practical impact on our profession and inspire products and changes in the marketplace. With this objective in mind, the AALL Research Grant Advisory Committee has chosen "The Management of Information" as the topic for 1997.
The management of information is a principal responsibility of today's law librarian. Managing information applies to the entire legal information profession regardless of where or how legal information professionals practice their profession.
Effective information management results in a responsive profession, productive staff, integrated technology, relevant information products, improved access by end users, and a dynamic marketplace. This topic encompasses many areas for potential research, providing a wealth of research opportunities in the creation, dissemination and use of legal and law-related information. Areas for potential research may include:
- Access to government information
- Convenience of access
- Distribution of information
- Enhancement of research capabilities
- Intellectual property issues
- Copyright and the Internet
- Redistribution of information
- Impact of changes in legal publishing
- Consolidation of publishers
- Growth of niche publishing
- Electronic ordering, billing, and claiming
- Format coordination and integration
- Duplication of materials in different formats
- Selection of appropriate format(s)
- Development of unified search protocols
- Consumer needs and expectations
- Standards and guidelines
- Reliability of electronic information
- Preservation (retention and integrity of information)
- Authentication of electronic information
Applicants must demonstrate experience with research projects and understanding of the dissemination and use of legal and law-related information. Priority will be given to practicing law librarians and AALL members, working individually or in partnership with other information professionals. Applicants must provide a resume and a statement of their qualifications for carrying out this project.
Allocation of the research grants will be at the sole discretion of the AALL/Little, Brown & Company Research Grant Advisory Committee. The Committee members are Linda Maslow, Chair (Assistant Librarian for Research Services, Supreme Court of the United States Library, Washington, D.C.), Leah Chanin (Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law, University of the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C.), Patricia DeGeorges (Legal Library Manager, Pfizer Inc., Law Library, New York, New York), Elizabeth McKenzie (Director, Suffolk University Law Library, Boston, Massachusetts), Michael Petit (Head of Acquisitions, Georgetown University Law Center, Edward Bennett Williams Library, Washington, D.C.), Roberta Shaffer (Library Director, Covington & Burling, Washington D.C.) and Nancy P. Johnson (Law Librarian and Professor of Law, Georgia State University College of Law, Atlanta, Georgia) as AALL Executive Board Liaison.
