April 9, 1998
Many of our AALL members have been participating during the spring congressional recess in district meetings with their representatives to urge them to co-sponsor H.R. 3048 or S. 1146. These meetings provide a wonderful opportunity for law librarians to present the library community's belief that we must update copyright law in a balanced manner to extend fair use, distance education and preservation into the digital age.
I am very grateful to all who have responded to our calls for action with willingness and enthusiasm! We are at a critical time period in terms of the legislative process, so if you haven't yet joined the postcard campaign for new co-sponsors, please do so today. The House WIPO implementation bill that we oppose, H.R. 2281, has been reported out of committee and the Senate is preparing to move quickly after the April recess. The next two weeks are critical if we are to be successful in advancing these two pro-library bills. Thank you for all your efforts!
