Candidates who apply for the AALL Educational Scholarships Types I-IV are automatically considered for the LexisNexis™ John R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Endowment, which helps further the education of aspiring law librarians.
The Johnson scholarship is awarded annually to library and law school students who have exhibited high academic achievement and have demonstrated their desire to enter the field of law librarianship. Scholarship funds are allocated at the discretion of the AALL Scholarships Committee. The committee has previously disbursed about $2,000-$3,500 to each recipient.
The scholarship was created in honor of John R. Johnson, former director of librarian relations at LexisNexis™ and a longtime law library supporter, who died in 1994. He deemed librarians as "the only ones who know how real users use real information." Optimistic about the role of librarians in the future, Johnson predicted that law librarians would assume even greater responsibility in the expanding electronic-networked environment.
The application deadline for all scholarships is April 1.
