Have you thought about library school since you graduated? Take some time to evaluate, reflect and share your thoughts on the state of library schools today. Join the Professional Development Program’s listserv discussion “What’s Going on in Library Schools?” March 10-14.
The discussion will cover the goals of library schools, examining what valuable information librarians did not learn while they were in school but believe should be added to current curricula. Listserv participants will have an opportunity to compare programs, talk about their library school experiences, and provide possible solutions to enrich today's library school programs. Topics will address the following questions: What did you enjoy about your classes? What are the guidelines for selecting a top-notch library school? How can library schools improve their programs? What library school would you recommend and why? What was your favorite research project? If you were working in a law library while attending school, were you able to focus projects to meet the needs of your employer? Did the school you attend or are attending have interdisciplinary views? Do you prefer traditional classroom settings or the virtual classrooms online? Are there drawbacks to distance education with a library curriculum? Why are some library schools in danger of closing and how it will affect future library science programs?
This lively discussion will be moderated by Barbara Fullerton, manager of Locke, Liddell & Sapp Law Library in Dallas. Fullerton graduated in 1996 from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, with an M.L.I.S. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
