The AALL/LexisNexis® Call for Papers Awards Program Application

Eligibility

  • Open Division: Active and Retired AALL members who have been members for five or more years
  • New Members Division: Active and Retired AALL members who have been members of AALL for fewer than five years.
  • Student Division: Currently enrolled students in library school, information management school or the equivalent, or law school. Students need not be members of AALL.

Substantive Requirements

No paper, or portion of a paper, that has been published or accepted for publication before March 1, 2008 will be eligible for consideration. Before submitting a paper, all authors are responsible for having conducted a preemption check to ensure that a substantially similar paper has not been published elsewhere. Papers submitted for courses are acceptable, provided that they otherwise comply with the requirements of this contest.

A paper may address any subject relevant to law librarianship. It may be scholarly or practical in substance and tone, but the subject should be explored in depth with appropriate reference to sources and documentation of assertions. Submissions for the Student Division should also include a supporting letter from an instructor at the institution at which the student is enrolled (preferably the supervising faculty member of the paper).

Co-authored papers are acceptable, but each and every author who submits a co-authored entry for the Student Division must meet the student eligibility requirements of this category. Winners of a co-authored paper will share the $750 award. Entrants may submit more than one paper, but may win only one prize per year. To encourage as wide participation in the competition as possible, authors may win a prize only twice in the same division before March 1, 2008.

Form Requirements

The papers must be double-spaced with one-and-one-half (1 1/2) inch margins. Citation and style must conform to the requirements outlined in the Law Library Journal "Authors Guide." Each submission must be accompanied by a cover letter describing the purpose of the paper, a short abstract, and a completed Application Form. Submit the paper, application, cover letter, abstract (and, for the Student Division, instructor's letter) as attachments to an e-mail sent to the address listed below.

Procedure

To be eligible for an award in the Open or new Members Division, papers, together with all required supporting documents, must be submitted by March 1, 2008.

To be eligible for an award in the Student Division, papers, together with all required supporting documents, must be submitted by April 15, 2008.

All submissions must be Microsoft Word. They should be sent as attachments to an e-mail to the following address: hphelps@aall.org

Please note: if your article is longer than 20 pages, you will need to submit it as multiple Word files. If you have any questions as to how to do this, you can contact the Chair of the Call for Papers Committee, Joseph L. Gerken at the following e-mail address: gerken@buffalo.edu

Papers will be reviewed by the AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee. All decisions of the Committee are final.

Submission of papers authorizes the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) to publish and/or reprint the winning papers should AALL choose to do so. By submitting a paper, the entrant certifies that the entrant is either currently:

  1. an Active or Retired AALL member, or pursuing a graduate degree in library studies, information management or the equivalent at an American Library Association-- accredited library school, or
  2. pursuing a graduate law degree at an American Bar Association-- accredited law school.

AALL reserves the right to confirm that an entrant is qualified to enter the competition.
