PROPOSED BYLAWS REVISION TO BE VOTED UPON AT THE CAUCUS BUSINESS MEETING

The Bylaws Committee of the BCAALL present these recommendations for bylaws revisions, for approval of the membership Bylaws Revision.

The major changes suggested are:

bullet the creation of the office of Past-Chair to promote smooth continuity from one board leadership to the next and help retain institutional memory.
bullet the creation of the office of Member-at-Large to focus on planning the annual scholarship dinner and to assist with other Caucus matters.
bullet replacement of the Current Awareness Committee with the Community Service Committee.
bullet to have procedures not covered by the bylaws governed by the parlimentary procedure rules current used by AALL.

Please review these proposed changes before the Caucus Business meeting, which will take place at the meeting on Sunday, July 13, 2008, 5:30pm at the Oregon Convention Center.

Greetings from your Chair

I am Donna Nixon and it is my honor to serve you as chair of the AALL Black Caucus this year. I was privileged last year to serve as vice-chair under the leadership of Ruth Hill, the new library director of Southern University Law Center. Much thanks to Ruth for her distinguished leadership.

As chair I’d like to work with you on some of the ideas that Ruth and others have suggested to nourish the leadership and positive energy that this caucus generates. Our caucus is filled with extremely smart, talented and ambitious folks and I want to work to foster that potential to benefit the caucus members individually and collectively. I also want us to focus on ways that we can recruit more minority librarians into the profession and mentor our newer colleagues. With those things in mind, I’d like to use this site as a platform to trumpet the great things the caucus does for the profession and to encourage prospective and new librarians to contact us for advice, guidance, fellowship and support.

There are things Caucus members do that we don’t brag enough about, like our support for the George Strait Scholarship, the wonderful new book Celebrating Diversity authored by Carol Avery Nicholson, et. al. (got your copy yet?), and the formal and informal mentorship relationships we form with new librarians and budding law professionals. Also, people need to know about our wonderful successes, like all the Caucus library directors sprouting up, and Carol’s historic presidency of AALL. Those are things I plan to highlight with your help.

As the hectic pace of the fall dies down a little, expect to see some missives from your leadership asking your input and assistance in lighting sparks to shine the Caucus’s light. Together I know we can have a great year!
