And Still I Rise: Resurrecting the Legal System in New Orleans, Tales from the
Trenches
At the 2007 annual meeting, the Black Caucus presented a dynamic program
focusing on the efforts of the legal system in New Orleans to recover from the
disastrous floods that inundated the city after Hurricane Katrina. The three
speakers, Judge Edwin A. Lombard, Laurie White, Esq., and Dean Brian Bromberger
of Loyola Law School, presented stories and perspectives from the three sectors
of the legal community: the judiciary, the practicing bar and legal education.
Below are links to a video and an excellent bibliography that were part of the
program materials:
The video linked above was excerpted from a video produced by Wild Hair
Productions and commissioned by Robert Gunn, et. al., judicial administrators
with the New Orleans courts, for a panel discussion on the effects of Katrina on
the judicial system in the state of Louisiana (and Mississippi) for the
Conference of Court Public Information Officer's (CCPIO) Annual Meeting, held in
Phoenix in 2007. Sincere thanks to Robert Gunn for permission to show this
video.
To order an audio CD of the program go to

Sexual Orientation
and the Law: A Research Bibliography
Friends and Colleagues,
I am delighted to share with BLLC members the news that the SR-SIS's Standing
Committee on Lesbian and Gay Issues bibliography volume entitled Sexual
Orientation and the Law: A Research Bibliography (published by Hein as AALL
Publication Series #74) has now been released. This historic 426 page volume
represents the culmination of a collaborative effort by myself and many SR-SIS
members, and I think we can all be proud of the result.
This bibliography includes a previously published, unannotated bibliography
covering the years 1969-1993, the new annotated bibliography covering the years
1994-2005, a wonderful introduction discussing social changes and the
corresponding development of the sexual orientation legal literature by Brad
Sears, the Executive Director of the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation
Law and Public Policy at UCLA School of Law, a preface by Editor-in-Chief James
Donovan of the University of Georgia Law Library, a case name index and an
author index.
If your library does not receive these titles on standing order, we hope you'll
consider purchasing a copy for your collection. Not only do we feel the
bibliography would be a useful tool for anyone interested in the central legal
issues touching the lives of LGBT persons, but a portion of the receipts goes to
the Standing Committee on Lesbian and Gay Issues to help fund its grants and
other activities. Plus, my name appears prominently in the center of the
title page as I am one of the associate editors.
