Manager, Knowledge Management (posted 5/6/08)

Alston & Bird is conducting a search for a Manager, Knowledge Management, in our Atlanta office. Under the direction of the Director of Practice Innovation, the Manager performs a variety of duties related to the capture and organization of institutional knowledge, and facilitating access to such knowledge for attorneys to use in their legal practice.  Responsible for a variety of administrative duties including the day-to-day supervision of the Knowledge Management staff including project management.  Position requires substantial knowledge of existing and emerging technologies and the ability to implement them.

Essential duties also include:

·       Supervise the day-to-day activities of the Knowledge Management staff.

·       Identify need for, develop, recommend, and implement appropriate procedures/systems to ensure efficient and effective administration of the Knowledge Management group.

·       Communicate regularly with the Director of Practice Innovation on department activities and projects.

·       Manage group project and activities so that deadlines and requirements are satisfactorily met

·       Assist Director of Practice Innovation in the development of the practice innovation department budget.

·       Meet with practice groups to explore their practice needs. Serve as liaison/consultant to the practice groups to assess practice needs and market firm KM products.

·       Compile documentation of project development and subsequent revisions.

·       Revise or direct revision of existing programs to increase operation efficiency or adapt to new requirements.

·       Train subordinates.

·       Consult on Application Development, Application Support and Case Support Projects, as well as relevant IT projects, from a KM perspective.

·       Participate in the evaluation of software used by the law firm.

·       Monitor project process by coordinating, tracking and recording document collection and requirements associated with each phase of the project.

·       Coordinate all facets of training end users with the Training Department.

·       Oversee updates to Formbank and Knowledge Base

·       Facilitate Help calls pertaining to specific issues related to the Formbank, HotDocs, Dealproof, Westkm.

·       Oversee Knowledge Management Analyst.

·       Work with attorneys on various Transactional Practice Quality Team Projects.

·       Review technical publications and literature to stay current with tools, software, and technical approaches.

·       Together with IT and PI staff, continually modify the Knowledge Management strategy for the firm as needed, including forms, training, advisories, deal record-keeping, new technological tools, workflow improvements and enhanced communication among practice areas.

·       Review technical publications and literature, and attend seminars/conferences to stay current with tools, software, and technical approaches.

·       Perform other miscellaneous duties, as assigned by the Director of Practice Innovation.

This Top Echelon employee must have exceptional problem solving skills, as well as good technical testing skills.  Requires excellent written and oral communication skills.  Strong attention to detail is essential as well as a demonstrated ability to work under pressure. 

A Bachelor Degree required, Masters Degree or JD preferred. Minimum of 7 years of law firm experience with emphasis in either law practice or a technology related field.
