Purpose

To provide Library School students with programs and opportunities to learn about the work and careers in law libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate programs with vendors (Intro to Lexis for MLS Students and Intro to Westlaw for MLS Students)
  • Organize all aspects of Student Breakfast/Luncheon and library tours
  • Facilitate internship opportunities
  • Provide networking opportunities for students
  • Work with other organizations to coordinate and participate in programs that focus on student career development

Procedures

  • Organize vendor sponsored programs (Intro to Lexis for MLS Students and Intro to Westlaw for MLS Students):
    • Work with vendors' Library Relations representatives to select a date and time for programs to take place in February or March
    • Create a flyer for each program detailing date, time, place and contact information, and present to the Board for its approval
    • Promote programs to students - mail flyers (color copies) to school departments and professors and email a program announcement to the library school listservs and professors
    • Promote programs to LLAGNY members - email a program announcement to the LLAGNY, PLL and Law-Lib listservs, forward the announcement to Law Lines and the LLAGNY webmaster to post on the homepage and add to the LLAGNY calendar
    • Track responses and email attendees confirmation of attendance and reminder announcement 24 hours in advance of programs
    • Track actual attendance
    • Provide a write up of the programs to the LLAGNY board
  • Organize the annual Student Breakfast/Luncheon:
    • Begin organizing in December or January to coordinate multiple schedules for an available date in March or April
    • Contact library directors to find a location for the breakfast and libraries available for large group tours
    • Work with Sponsorship Committee or the chosen vendor reps directly to get food expenses covered
    • Locate a speaker (typically a LLAGNY officer)
    • Coordinate a tour for students of 2-3 libraries, emphasizing the role of librarians
    • Provide the Board with projection of costs and expenses for the program (food, speaker, mailing, etc.)
    • Create a flyer detailing date, time, place, speaker and contact information, and present to the Board for its approval
    • Promote program to students - mail flyer (color copies) to school departments and professors and email a program announcement to the library school listservs and professors
    • Promote programs to LLAGNY members - email a program announcement to the LLAGNY, PLL and Law-Lib Listservs, forward the announcement to Law Lines and the LLAGNY webmaster to post on the homepage and add to the LLAGNY calendar
    • Track responses and email attendees confirmation of attendance and reminder announcement 24 hours in advance of programs
    • Coordinate food order and payment in advance of event with sponsor
    • Contact Volunteer Committee to locate 2-3 librarians who will attend and be available to interact with the students, participate in the Q&A portion and help lead the group from one location to another
    • Introduce speaker at luncheon
    • Track actual attendance
    • Provide a write up of the program to the LLAGNY board
  • Coordinate internship program:
    • Conduct outreach to the library schools and to LLAGNY member libraries to attract students and prospective sponsors
    • Review the LLAGNY Internship flyer for current and correct contact information
    • Submit substantive changes to the board for approval
    • Promote internships to LLAGNY members - forward the flyer to Law Lines and the LLAGNY webmaster to post on the homepage
    • At the beginning of each semester mail color copies of the flyer to the school departments and professors, and email
    • the details of the flyer to the library school listservs and professors
    • Receive and relay requests for interns and internships as requested
    • Notify LLAGNY members of interested interns via LLAGNY listserv when needed
    • Keep records of suggested matches and actual placements
  • Contacts:
    • Maintain a list of mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and listservs for the five area library school programs, department contacts and relevant professors
    • Maintain a list of websites posting job opportunities and contact information for recruiters for new or soon to be graduates looking for employment
    • Review and update information as needed each semester
