Purpose

To provide free quality legal research to attorneys, law firms, pro se litigants and organizations that undertake the representation of indigent clients on a Pro Bono basis.

Procedures

  • Maintain a list of LLAGNY member volunteers willing to accept Pro Bono assignments.
  • Requests for research assistance are accepted after the following criteria are met:
  • Requesters must submit to the Committee Chair a formal written and signed statement identifying his/her self or organization. Statement must indicate that the research request is for a Pro Bono matter.
  • Researcher request must then be clearly outlined, indicating any deadlines or special needs and submitted to the Committee Chair.
  • Committee Chairs distribute requests to volunteers on a round robin basis.
  • Volunteers can only refuse one assignment before being removed from the Pro Bono volunteer list.
  • Volunteers can work together as a team to complete an assignment.
  • Each volunteer is responsible to check if any conflict of interest exists with the request and their firm.
  • Volunteers upon being presented with an assignment, keep requesters informed of progress and any problems if and when they arise. Volunteers can always call upon the Committee Chairs for advice.
  • Requesters are responsible to make themselves available to volunteers for the discussion of research assignments and to answer any questions.
  • Requesters are responsible to provide for and arrange for the pickup and delivery of all work products (messenger, mail, fax, etc.)
  • Volunteers are responsible to notify a committee chair once a request is complete or in the event it cannot be completed, to provide the chair with the reason it cannot be completed.
