1999-2000 Activity Report
The Board followed the fine example of its predecessor, continuing to develop an effective administrative structure for the chapter. A key accomplishment was the creation and approval of SANDALL's Policies and Procedures Master List. This working document, which is a precursor to a more formal chapter handbook, contains items such as the budget allocations, approved committee mission statements, and approved board policies, all documented with dates of approval as designated in minutes of meetings. In February, the chapter was pleased to welcome AALL Executive Board Member Maryruth Storer for the annual AALL visit. Maryruth spoke about a number of library and information issues being addressed at the national level, and encouraged chapter members to become involved in AALL. California Western School of Law served as host site for the meeting, which included a dinner and tours of the new law school library. Thanks go to Professor and Library Director Phyllis Marion and her staff for the wonderful job they did in hosting the meeting. Also, special recognition goes to LEXIS-NEXIS, who co-sponsored the dinner, which was free to chapter members. SANDALL was honored to sponsor two VIPs for the 2000 annual AALL meeting in Philadelphia: Judge Michael Harris, San Diego Superior Court, and attorney Philip Burkhardt. These two gentleman have a strong commitment to law libraries and are currently serving on the Board of Trustees for the San Diego County Public Law Library. For the second year, SANDALL, NOCALL, and SCALL members enjoyed a joint reception, sponsored by Martindale Hubbell, at the annual meeting. COMMITTEES ByLaws: This was a fairly quiet year for Chair Carol Hyne, as no amendments or additions were proposed. Employment Liaison: Chair Carolyn Vega was very busy, posting available library positions on the chapter list serv during the year. The booming economy appeared to have a strong impact on the number of available library and information technology positions, and postings appeared almost weekly. Grants: Chair Michelle Schmidt and members Corrin Gee-Alvarado and Jean Willis solicited applicants for grants to the fall 1999 workshop. When there were no applicants for the workshop, probably due to its affordable cost, the committee was able to award two grants to members Amy Hale and Owen Smith to attend the SCALL Institute in February. The SANDALL Board approved a special grant for Chapter Web Master Patrick Meyer to attend a web site management program. Internet Committee: Co-chairs Patrick Meyer and Michelle Schmidt, assisted by Joan Condell, Barbara Glennan, and Kim Kane had a very busy year. Owen Smith, who had ably served as Web Master for the prior two years, turned over his duties to Patrick, who did a great job, coordinating the migration of the chapter website to AALLNET. The website continues to grow, containing over 1,600 links and over 200 images, and the committee is to be commended for its commitment to quality control. Internet Special Interest Group: Chair Kim Kane coordinated the monthly lunch meetings, where members got together to share information about websites. Discussions from the meetings were posted on the chapter list serv and published in the newsletter for the benefit of all members. Membership: Treasurer Diane Garcia updated and published the membership directory. Newsletter Committee: Editor Barbara Glennan, Business Manager Ruth Levor, and Proof Reader Carmen Valero, published four issues of the SANDALL News this year. After creating a rate scale and format guidelines for advertisers, which were published in a brochure, the committee began accepting advertising. Each issue continues to grow in substance and quality, as chapter members have eagerly contributed articles for publication. Nominations Committee: Chair Liz Carroll and members Pat Bermel and Laurel Moran started in early 2000 and put together a terrific slate of candidates for the 2000-2001 board election. This year's election was contested for all but the President's office. Programs: Vice-President and Programs Chair John Adkins, assisted by committee members Carmen Brigandi, Sushila Selness and Steven Whiteside, provided a full slate of events throughout the year. This year's fall workshop, "2000: A Cyber Odyssey," was a full day of programs covering Internet privacy, digital copyright issues, and use of technology in trial preparation. Program speakers included: Beth Givens, Privacy Rights Clearing House, attorney and USD adjunct professor Brad Biddle, Jack Boyce of the Boyce Law Firm, and Craig Courter of Seltzer, Caplan, Wilkins & McMahon. In addition, the committee presented 5 brown bag programs during the year. September's program speaker was Larry Hugg, Information Specialist with the Bureau of the Census, who talked about the upcoming 2000 census. In October, USD Law Professor and Library Director Nancy Carter discussed Indian Gaming law, an important topic in California. January's brown bag featured California Associate Justice and author Patricia Benke, who shared some of the research methods which she uses in her "second career" as a novelist. The March program, sponsored jointly by SANDALL and the local SLA chapter, featured USD law professor Arti Rai, who talked about the current trend of rushing to register patents for computer software and biotech products. In May, Martin Kruming, Daily Journal Corporation, offered suggestions about effective marketing strategies to SANDALL members. In addition to these fine educational programs, John and his committee organized social events which were well-attended and enjoyed by chapter members. A holiday tea, sponsored by Westgroup, was held at the Horton Grand in December. February offered an opportunity for members to meet an AALL Executive Board Member and tour the new law library at Cal Western School of Law while enjoying a catered dinner co-sponsored by Lexis. And in May, members got together to toast the newly elected board at a happy hour gathering in Old Town. Special recognition goes to Linda Johnson (California Western School of Law), who designed the official chapter logo and created the official chapter certificate. And last, but certainly not least, I would like to express my appreciation to all SANDALL members, whose support and strong attendance at all the chapter events have contributed to making our second year a great one!
