2001-2002 Activity Report

In its fourth year as an official AALL chapter, SANDALL maintained an active schedule of educational and social programs.

SANDALL currently has 88 members, and nine standing committees: Archives, Bylaws, Employment Liaison, Grants, Membership, Newsletter, Nominations, Programs, and Internet. The Board for 2001-2002 included: Mary Garcia, President; Amy Hale-Janeke, Vice President; Sushila Selness, Secretary; Donna Gagnon, Treasurer; and John Adkins, Past President.

The chapter welcomed Bob Oakley, AALL Immediate Past President and Washington Affairs Representative to SANDALL's Annual Business Meeting on June 7th, as keynote speaker. He addressed a number of AALL activities and issues concerning legislation in Washington, especially in light of September 11th. He presided over the installation of officers for 2002-2003: Tracey Pardo, President; Sushila Selness, Vice President; Sheila Corman, secretary; Owen Smith, Treasurer; and Mary Garcia, Past President.

Highlights of several committees include:
* Pat Lopez represented SANDALL on the LEAP (Legal Employment Awareness Program) Task Force whose primary purpose is to " inform and entice" high school students into the legal profession. To that end, Martin Kruming, chair of LEAP did the January brown bag presentation. After learning about job shadowing opportunities, several SANDALL members volunteered to have a student job-shadow them on "Groundhog Day".

*Chaired by Web Master Carol Hyne, the Internet Committee was reorganized this year into the Web Page Development Group and the Internet Resources Group. In addition to accomplishing all the regular postings, the Web structure was reorganized and the html code was cleaned up, thereby reducing file size by as much as 60% in some cases.

*Joan Allen Hart, SANDALL's liaison to the AALL Government Relations Committee, kept us informed on several legislative issues. In collaboration with NOCALL and SCALL, letters were sent to all California ABA delegates asking them to oppose UCITA, and to California state representatives voicing our opposition to AB 2648. We also cosponsored the second annual Law Librarians Legislative Day workshop in Sacramento in May.

*The Long Range Planning Committee, chaired by John Adkins, was established this past year. A survey was compiled, distributed, and the results were tallied. A Town Hall Meeting will be held to discuss issues raised in the survey.

*SANDALL's Program Committee, chaired by VP Amy Hale-Janeke, held five brown bags, conducted a full-day fall workshop titled "Going for the Gold: Winning the Race for Competitive Intelligence", and coordinated the Holiday Party and Spring Social. We also held a "Coming Together" meeting following September 11th. SANDALL committed $200 to the AALL Memorial Fund, and joined by NOCALL and SCALL this became a Pan-California gesture.

Recognition is offered to those not previously mentioned who chaired committees or accomplished specific tasks for SANDALL; Margaret McDonald, Barbara Glennan, Carolyn Vega, Jean Willis, Kim Kane, Pat Bermel, Amy Moberly, Sheila Corman and Ruth Levor.

I would like to express my appreciation to all the members of SANDALL who dedicated their time, talents, and energy this past year. As we continue to evolve, it is this commitment that will guarantee the future success of SANDALL.

Mary Garcia, President
