Committee
Annual Reports, 1998-99 Archives The Archives Committee formulated its charge, which is to collect and make accessible materials on SANDALL to its members. A collection of materials was gathered from association members, and organization begun according to basic archival practices. A home for the archives was found at the University of San Diego Legal Research Center. Margaret McDonald, Chair, USD Legal Research
Center The SANDALL bylaws were redrafted in June 1998 based on the previously existing SANDALL by-laws and those of LLOPS (Law Libraries of Puget Sound). They were approved by the SANDALL membership prior to submission to AALL in partial application for chapterhood. Changes and amendments were suggested in March of this year in order for SANDALL to apply for tax exempt status. The proposed revisions were formally drafted and presented to the membership for comment and a vote of approval. Carol J. Hyne, Chair The Employment Liaison regularly forwarded library job announcements to the SANDALL listserv and newsletter. Interested subscribers were able to take advantage of these, if desired, in a timely manner. Carolyn Vega, Chair The SANDALL Grants Committee was established by the Executive Board in December 1998. The Committee's purpose is to issue grants to SANDALL members to support attendance at Association-sponsored education activities. The Committee was charged with developing policies and procedures, and advertising the grants program, as well as selecting recipients. For the 1998-99 year, the Committee issued two grants each for the AFirst NOCALL/SCALL Joint Institute@ held in February 1999 and the ASANDALL Workshop on Disaster Preparedness@ held in May 1999. Our first assignment was to create a simple grant application that could be used generically for both events and that could be posted to the SANDALL website. The AALL Grants Committee and AALL Grants Manual were consulted for guidance. In addition, various AALL Chapter and SIS grant applications, manuals and websites were also reviewed. Many of these sources required applicants to fill out lengthy applications. Along with the grant application, selection criteria used in awarding grants was also investigated. After a number of drafts and consultations, the Committee mailed its first
grant application for the Joint Institute. After this initial grant process,
the grant application was revised to clarify possible ambiguities. A
second mailing was conducted for the SANDALL Workshop. Two grants were
awarded for this event. Michelle Schmidt, Chair, Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps Internet Special Interest Group (SIG) The Internet SIG met monthly on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 1-2:00 p.m., at the San Diego County Law Library (SDCPLL). Each person who attended the meeting was asked to bring a URL which was discussed. We had access to the Internet at each of the meetings, so we were able to view the websites. This year's highlight was a lively discussion on Y2K with input from two of the systems people from SDCPLL. I would like to thank all of the SANDALL members who came to the monthly meetings and the SANDALL newsletter editors who listed the URL's in the newsletter for the people who didn't have a chance to come. Kim Kane, Chair We have approximately 102 members in SANDALL. Diane Garcia created a membership database and produced a directory that was distributed at the December Holiday Luncheon meeting. This database is also used to produce mailing labels for the newsletter. We will be modifying the membership application to add a question regarding the prospective member's membership in AALL. This is done because SANDALL reports to AALL the percentage of our members which are also members of that organization. The Board proposed to the SANDALL membership that dues be increased to $15 per year. Upon application based on hardship, the Board may reduce a particular member's dues to $7.50. The membership approved this proposal at the Annual Business meeting. Nanna Frye, Chair, California Court of Appeal The Newsletter Committee would like to thank the SANDALL membership and board for the support and feedback they have given to the newsletter over the past year. California Western School of Law, University of San Diego Legal Research Center, and Thomas Jefferson School of Law have all generously funded the publication of the newsletter in order to help SANDALL get a good start. The newsletter now receives funding directly from SANDALL, and will begin to accept advertisements next season. This past year the newsletter began publishing in a new print format as well as on the web, using MS Publisher software. We have printed articles written by SANDALL members as well as AALL membership submissions. Regular features include the President's Column, Internet User Group Links, law librarian career opportunities, Member Profiles, and SANDALL Calendar of Events. Barbara Glennan has been editor. Carmen Valero has taken the time to proofread SANDALL news issues before publication. Ruth Levor, outgoing and incoming SANDALL Secretary, has provided invaluable guidance to the committee and board this year on newsletter issues. Due to the depth of her experience in this area, she was able to single handedly write our newsletter editorial and advertising policy. We look forward to all three continuing on for the 1999-2000 year. As always, please contact Ruth or Barbara regarding ideas, questions or comments on improving the SANDALL News. Barbara Glennan, Newsletter Editor, California
Western School of Law First, I would like to thank the other two members who served on this committee with me: Colleen Buskirk, San Diego County Public Law Library, and Liz Carroll, US Courts Library. We had the unique opportunity to accomplish our responsibilities for two full elections in less than one year. We were pleased with our slate of candidates for both elections, and thank everyone who stepped forward to run for office. Our first election of Officers was for the term commencing October 1, 1998, and ending with the installation of new Officers at our First Annual Meeting, June 9, 1999. We had 93 SANDALL members when we held our first election, and we received 73 ballots back. For the second election, we received 48 ballots out of our current membership of 102. Our first elected Officers were: President, Brent Bernau, Thomas Jefferson School of Law; Vice President, Carmen Brigandi, California Western School of Law; Secretary, Ruth Levor, University of San Diego Pardee Legal Research Center; and Treasurer, Nanna Frye, California Court of Appeal Library. The following are our Officers from the second SANDALL election: President, Joan Allen-Hart, San Diego County Public Law Library; Vice President, John Adkins, University of San Diego Pardee Legal Research Center; Secretary, Ruth Levor, University of San Diego Pardee Legal Research Center; and Treasurer, Diane Garcia, Higgs, Fletcher & Mack LLP. We would like to thank California Western School of Law for underwriting the expenses of our first election: the printing of the ballot and the brief biographies of the candidates, the envelopes, and postage. We practiced frugality with the second election by including the ballot in the February SANDALL Newsletter, which was underwritten by Thomas Jefferson School of Law. We would encourage continuing the practice of including the ballot with the newsletter, if feasible, but recommend using a heavier paper stock. Mary Garcia, Chair, California Western School
of Law The Programs Committee provided the following educational opportunities for
its members: February 1999 Brown Bag: Paul Wormser from NARA. Facilities, cookies and beverages provided by Carolyn Vega, Librarian at Latham & Watkins. March 1999 Brown Bag: Garth Conboy of Softbook Press. Facilities, cookies and beverages provided by June Mac Leod of Gray, Cary. April 1999 AALL Video-Conference on Customer Service. Facilities (discount) provided by University of San Diego School of Law. May 1999 Workshop on Disaster Preparedness. Presented by Julie Page, and Lyn Olsson. Facilities provided by Thomas Jefferson School of Law. SANDALL also sponsored a December 1998 Holiday Luncheon that was partially underwritten by Lexis and the organization's Annual Business Meeting in June. Facilities for both of these events were provided by California Western School of Law. Carmen Brigandi, Chair, California Western
School of Law I would like to thank the following for all of their support and work in the last several months: Owen Smith, Webmaster; USD for housing our site; Linda Johnson for the creation of the logo; all committee members -- Michele Schmidt, Joan Condell, Linda de la Garza, Kim Kane and Barbara Glennan; and anyone who has taken time to give us your feedback. What we do: What has been accomplished: We've uncluttered the homepage by moving the vertical table of contents to its own page. Our goal is to make the site in general, and the homepage in particular, as easy to navigate as possible while still making it aesthetically appealing. The committee ironed out our mission statement and added that to the homepage. Cataloging and Technical Services received its own page. Previously, cataloging links were buried in another page and there was no separate set of resources for technical services. We have added an "Online Resource Guides" page that contains subject compilations of Westlaw, LEXIS and Internet resources. We have added a "HOW TOs" page that contains information on how to perform specific functions with word processing, presentation software, spreadsheet and research in Word, WordPerfect, Westlaw, LEXIS and the Internet. What we intend to accomplish: Patrick Meyer, Chair, Thomas Jefferson School of Law |
