Committee
Annual Reports, 1999-2000 The Committee Chair continues to gather and organize SANDALL materials. An
additional entry in the SANDALL mailing list has made it easier for the Chair
to acquire items as they are issued to the membership. Items added to
the archives include materials in paper format (including meeting minutes,
agendas, newsletter issues, handouts from the brown bag luncheons, etc.), photographs,
and videocassette recordings of the November 1999 workshop presentations. The
Chair also made available duplicate copies SANDALL memorabilia to our Secretary,
Ruth Levor, for inclusion in the AALL chapter time capsule project. AALL
will store the chapter capsules for 25 years and open them at the 2025 annual
meeting. Submitted by Margaret McDonald, University of San Diego Legal Research Center By-Laws Employment Liaison The Grants Committee was assigned with
soliciting the membership for grant recipients to the Annual SANDALL Workshop. The 1999 program was
entitled "2000: A Cyber Odyssey held November 5th, 1999." In addition
to including the grant application in the November 1999 SANDALL Newsletter,
the Committee posted an announcement regarding the availability of grants to
the Chapter e-mail list. Unfortunately, the Committee did not receive
any applicants for these grants and none were awarded for the SANDALL Workship. The
Committee's next assignment involved issuing two grants to the SCALL Institute,
entitled "E-Commerce: Opportunity or Caught in the Net?" held March 3rd and
4th, 2000. The Committee selected Amy Hale and Owen Smith. The
Board revised the Committee's mission statement. Respectfully submitted April 3, 2000. Michelle Schmidt, Chair Internet Special Interest Group (SIG) The SANDALL Special Interest Group: This year a group of us consistently met to share and research a variety of
websites. My favorite meeting was in July when we devoted the whole Kim Kane Membership Sandall News Annual Report Sandall News completed its second year of publication as a AALL newsletter. During the past year, the newsletter began accepting advertising. Ruth Levor researched and created the rate scale and format guidelines. She also published this information in a brochure and sent it out to SANDALL vendor members. Ruth Levor has also been Guest Editor for the last two issues of the SANDALL news, due the Editor's maternity leave. Thank you to all who have, contributed and worked with the SANDALL news this year. Nominations This was a busy and productive year. The Programs Committee was composed of John Adkins, Carmen Brigandi, Sushila Selness and Steven Whiteside. Substantive programs were offered on Census 2000, Indian Gaming Law, a fall workshop on privacy rights and information technology called "2000: A Cyber Odyssey," Law and Literature, Patents in Biotechnology and Computer Software, and professional marketing and public relations. Social events included a holiday tea co-sponsored by Westgroup, the opening
reception of Cal Western's new library and AALL chapter visit co-sponsored
by Lexis, and a happy hour get-together in Old Town. Submitted by John Adkins, Chair First of all, the Internet Committee extends its thanks to all those who submitted materials and/or suggestions for the Website. Without your input, many of the pages would be outdated and our jobs would be much harder. As you know, we have an expansive Website. Our site contains over 1,600 links and over 200 images. Individual Web pages within the site cover the following resources: Cataloging and technical services, California law, federal law, state law resources, general librarianship, San Diego links, How Tos, subject specific Online Resource Guides and a long list of law reviews available on the Web. Our site also contains a calendar of events, a jobs page, SANDALL policies and procedures, a SANDALL directory, access to the listserv, board minutes, and more. This year was a busy one. One important occurrence was the formulation of the Internet Committee Mission Statement: The mission of the SANDALL Internet Committee is to meet the information needs of the SANDALL membership regarding the Internet in general, and to share Internet resources available with the legal community. The Committee accomplishes this through the creation and maintenance of the SANDALL Web and through other related activities. One of the major happenings this past year was the migration of the SANDALL Web to the AALLNET server. We would like to thank USD for hosting the site for so long and for former Webmaster Owen Smith's hard work before and through the migration of the site! The migration undoubtedly entailed many hours of work for Owen. Much of this year was spent on editing the documents on our Website and reformatting the physical dimensions of each Web page. Most editing was performed on the "How To" and Online Resource Guides (ORGs) pages. There are 34 "How To" fliers, which cover a variety of subjects -- from performing tasks in Westlaw & LEXIS and how to use presentations software, to completing simple word processing functions. There are now 20 ORGs, covering a variety of legal topics. Eighteen of them have been updated and reformatted. They contain pertinent Internet, Westlaw & LEXIS databases particular to the legal subject. I've employed the use of a free mass link checker. The checker revealed that our site contains over 1,600 links and over 200 images. Thanks to fellow committee members Michelle Schmidt, Joan Condell, Barb Glennan and Kim Kane, and to the link checker program, there are now only a few non working links. I think that all of the old links that pointed to USD have been found and replaced -- although one can't be certain, because the free link checker programs don't always give the detail needed to pinpoint on what page the non-working hyperlink is located. There are new listserv subscription instructions to the Website, and we've added or updated a few forms, such as the volunteer form (thanks to Joan Allen-Hart), the membership form (thanks to Diane Garcia) and the grants application. While still Webmaster, Owen Smith also added the colorful SANDALL logo, created by Linda Johnson. We've revamped the grants site (thanks to Michelle Schmidt and Jean Willis). From that page, one can now link directly to the AALL CS-SIS Grants Committee page, the AALL PLL Grants Committee page, the ALA Awards, Grants & Scholarship page and the MLA Grants & Scholarships page. We continue to add the SANDALL board minutes (thanks to Ruth Levor). The site contains all meeting minutes from November, 1998. We continue to add the list of hyperlinks discussed at the monthly Internet SIG meetings (thanks to Kim Kane) and to add a link to each SANDALL News (our newsletter, thanks to Barb Glennan). We've added a brief SANDALL history (thanks, June MacLeod). And of course, keeping the Jobs page and Events page current is essential. Sincerely, Patrick Meyer SANDALL Internet Committee |
