Job Description

 
1. JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

       No prior library experience is required.

       In order to apply for a position with the SCALL Inner City Youth Internship Program, a    student should:

1)     be CURRENTLY enrolled in either the eleventh or twelfth grade

2)     have a 2.5 or above grade point average

3)     speak fluent English

4)     be educated in grammar, spelling, arithmetic and have good reading ability

5)     have word processing and computer knowledge

6)   live in the inner city

2. JOB DESCRIPTION:

       Interns placed at libraries may be assigned any of the following duties: (see note below)

1)     Maintain library materials by shelving, shifting, and shelf-reading

2)     File library materials such as:  loose-leaf pages, pocket parts, supplements, periodicals, microfiche, audio visual and/or correspondence

3)     Process, route library materials, sort and/or deliver mail

4)     Operate photocopiers, facsimile machines and/or computers

5)     Perform clerical, receptionist duties and/or accounting tasks

6)     Help with inventories and/or weeding collection

7)     Bar-coding collection

8)     other duties as necessary

      In order to perform these tasks, the intern may learn various:

1)     legal citations, library classification systems, and/or library databases

2)     research skills

3)     professional skills

 

NOTE: Not all of our interns work at libraries and therefore duties may vary according to the employer.

      The position helps the student to develop:

1)     a sense of responsibility and community

2)     good working habits

3)     the ability to prioritize daily activities

4)   library and/or clerical skills
