Heard Around Town... by Larry Meyer

Larry MeyerAs this is winter, I thought I’d start by reporting that from her new home in Albuquerque, Carole Levitt cheerfully acknowledges having received a couple inches of snow in her yard so far this winter. While the snow soon melted, she notes that the mountains surrounding her area continue to be covered with the white stuff.

Congratulations go out to the San Diego County Public Law Library and SANDALL on their successful children’s book drive. Held over the holidays, the drive collected 129 books for UPLIFT, an organization for under-privileged children in the San Diego area. Kudos to all involved for conducting this wonderful service project.

Rumor has it that at least one SCALL member, Cornell Winston, was able to attend the Inauguration in D.C. I am sure many of us who could not be there are looking forward to hearing his stories and seeing his pictures.

Alan Schroeder is preparing to teach a class on Legal Software for UCLA Extension. The class begins in late March. Best of luck to Alan while teaching this 12 week course.

Robert Ryan has an upcoming show scheduled for March 3rd and 4th. The show is at the Pico Playhouse and will serve as a fundraiser for his theater company, Vox Humana. Feel free to contact Bob for additional information.

Among the Beta test sites for GPO’s new FDSYS were the Whittier and San Bernardino County Law Libraries. Margot McLaren at Whittier reports a positive review of the new system and encourages everyone to go to GPO’s new page and test out the system.

Willow Ridge Band

Numerous SCALL members were spotted at the AALS Conference in San Diego the week of January 5th. Attendees attended numerous programs and a law librarian luncheon as well as found time to visit with colleagues and to take in the Exhibit Hall. One highlight for many was an evening event at Winston’s in Ocean Beach sponsored by the folks at Hein. Attendees were treated to the music of Winslow Ridge, a band of former USD students from the 70’s. Two well-known law librarians, who were USD law students at the time, Larry Dershem and Jim Heller, are members of the group. According to former Rohan Award winner Larry Dershem, the band last played together at the Sahara in Las Vegas on December 9, 1978. Those in attendance found it hard to believe that it had been 30 years since they last played together!

Back then it was Joe Simpson (bass & vocals); Jim Heller (lead guitar & vocals); Larry Dershem (drums & vocals); Jack Godfrey (rhythm guitar & vocals); and Rob Lindqvist (rhythm guitar & vocals). “We were the house band at Winston’s for two months back in the ‘70’s, when four people in our group were attending USD School of Law. Back in those days the club was called Webb’s.”

In case you don’t know, the band named itself after the Eagles song, Take It Easy, where it goes, “I was standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine sight to see….” The Ridge part, they’re not sure where it came from… “We just needed a word to go with ‘Winslow’.”

Today, Joe is Assistant Director at National University Library in San Diego. Jim is Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Larry says he now works at “this and that, every now and then.” Jack is now corporate counsel for a large casino development corporation in Las Vegas. Rob is a construction defects attorney at a San Francisco law firm, commuting weekly from his home in Carlsbad.

Are you ready for the SCALL Institute? Brian Raphael notes that the Embassy Suites in La Quinta is a new facility close to both Old Town La Quinta and the La Quinta Resort. Before the weekend is over, I am sure some SCALL members will have been seen at the Hog’s Breath Inn or one of Old Town’s other eating and beverage establishments.

This issue’s Question: The 91st AALL Annual Convention was held in Anaheim. Which SCALL Past President served as head of Local Arrangements? Bonus question: Who was AALL President that year?

Last issue’s Answer: Karen Lasnick was the first person to respond with the correct answer. Cornell Winston is the popular and well-known former SCALL President with the personal quest of visiting the grave sites of all deceased former U.S. Presidents.
