Library Information Specialist; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP; Los Angeles
The Los Angeles office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP is hiring a Library Information Specialist.
The Library Information Specialist will provide late afternoon and evening reference support to the Los Angeles and other U.S. offices as needed. Core hours are Monday – Friday, 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm with the appropriate scheduling flexibility.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: research and analysis of information in response to requests from attorneys, legal assistants, secretaries, and administrative managers. This includes answering specific questions, performing in-depth research for large projects, preparation of bibliographies, monitoring and disseminating current awareness, searching legal and non-legal databases, and performing in-depth subject area research. Other duties will include library maintenance for serials and catalogs such as sending our New York Office Library new title and verso pages for central cataloging, keeping record receipt and maintaining accurate title and copy information for serials. This individual will generate regular statistical reports from the catalog and other sources.
Assist and instruct attorneys and legal assistants in effective legal research techniques and sources through hands-on training and advanced instruction, individually, in small groups, or in classroom settings, including participation in the first-year Legal Skills Program. In conjunction with the Head Librarian, the Evening Librarian will assist in the development and teaching of weekly and monthly legal research courses by coordinating. This individual will coordinate coordinating a lunch time learning series of training sessions and act as a backup for the Head Librarian in new employee orientation and training on library resources and services. This will include coordinating training by outside vendors on online databases, under the Head Librarian's direction.
The successful candidate will have 2+ years of experience in a law firm or corporate library and have a working knowledge of library principles, organization and procedures and legal and business reference materials in both print and online; a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all levels of internal management; excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to employ judgment and discretion at all times; a high energy level and significant degree of resourcefulness; the ability to operate effectively both independently and within a team environment; and a willingness to work a flexible schedule. The candidate should have a working understanding of the Library of Congress Classification System, strong research skills and knowledge of an array of online database systems; experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Bloomberg, Westlaw Lexis-Nexis is preferred. A Master's degree in Library Science (M.L.S. or M.S.L.I.S.) from an accredited institution is required.
