The Fresno County Board of Law Library Trustees seeks applicants for a dynamic library director. The library director reports directly to an operating board of five judges, a member of the County Board of Supervisors and one attorney.

Founded in 1891, the Fresno County Law Library is a public law library operating under theCalifornia Business and Professions Code Sec. 6300 et seq. It is an independent local government agency funded primarily by a share of the court’s civil filing fees. The Fresno County Law Library is a progressive service-oriented institution with an operating budget over $800,000 a year and a staff of four serving the legal community and residents of California’s agriculture gem. The library is located in downtown Fresno within the main Superior Court building at 1100 Van Ness Avenue and is in close proximity to the county’s Family and Civil Courts, as well as the State Court of Appeals, Federal Bankruptcy and Eastern District Courts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A combination of a number of the following criteria would likely provide the required knowledge and skills to successfully perform the job duties:

  • JD or MLS degree or the equivalent from ABA/ALA accredited schools and five years of recent, progressively responsible, law library experience which have been in an administrative capacity;
  • Significant management and budgeting experience in a library setting;
  • Ability to speak and write effectively; analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action;
  • Understanding of accounting principles for government entities.


  • Complete all directives received from the Board of Trustees;
  • Administer the library budget;
  • Recommend to the Board of Trustees proposals for modifying, improving and expanding library services;
  • Build a suitable and practical collection of resources;
  • Provide reference services: in-house, by telephone, e-mail, and virtual programs;
  • Supervise library personnel;
  • Develop and manage the library’s engagement in Access to Justice initiatives;
  • Manage all other library operations.


  • Leadership skills, including critical thinking, creativity and risk-taking, and the ability to constructively transmit those skills to staff;
  • Commitment to outreach and the excellent customer service addressing a diverse constituency;
  • Coordination of outreach and partnerships within the organization and with the outside community;
  • Public speaking, project management and negotiation skills;
  • Understanding of employment and personnel law issues;
  • The ability and desire to listen to the concerns of patrons, staff, court representatives, the Board, and the larger community;
  • Commitment to the profession of law librarianship.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits package includes health plan with shared premium cost, CalPERS retirement with shared employer and employee cost pursuant to the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013.
