Part-time Research Librarian; Knobbe Martens; Orange County

Job Title: Part-time Research Librarian
Supervisor's Title: Director of Administration, Designated Partner
Status: Non-exempt (part-time)
Location: Orange County - This position requires the employee to work closely with attorneys and staff members during regularly scheduled hours.

General Summary:
This position requires the ability to provide legal and non-legal research assistance as requested and guidance on reference materials as requested.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Perform research as requested.
    • Respond to attorney/scientist/staff reference requests in a timely manner utilizing print and electronic resources.
    • Knowledge of information networks such as BNA, CCH, Dialog, Dun & Bradstreet, OCLC, Thomson Innovation, Westlaw and others.
    • Arrange interlibrary loans with local law firms, and public and institutional libraries.
    • Ability to analyze usage and cost-effectiveness of electronic research service to practice groups.
    • Maintain a high level of customer service and assure satisfaction in response to all the above requests.

  • Record all billable time into billing system.
    • Ensure billing deadlines are met timely.
    • Ensure all reference requests are properly recorded and billed.

  • Provide training.
    • Provide instruction on the effective use of reference materials.
    • Provide orientation to incoming attorneys, scientists and staff as requested,
    • Coordinate and continue training and development of library users.
    • Respond to user related questions and inquiries.

  • Collection development.
    • Research, evaluate and recommend new resources and technologies to further service the needs of the library users.
    • Actively look for opportunities to support reference department collections and services.
    • Participate in professional groups, listservs, and other means of communication and learning with other librarians.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
    • Participate in long range planning for the library as requested.
    • Attend monthly meetings of the library staff and participate as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Position requires a wide range of research, analytical and writing skills/
  • Requires initiative, ability to organize and prioritize, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in a library or law firm setting is required.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property law, Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, Delphion, Dialog and the use of other internet applications is desired, as well as the ability to be flexible and adaptable while working with changing technologies.
  • Must meet minimum testing requirements.
  • Ability to use office equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds.

Education and Experience:
Master of Library Science degree preferred but not required. Previous legal research experience required. Seeking person with superior research and communication skills.
