Supervises a wide variety of day-to-day serials control and processing tasks, including serials check-in, serials claims, receipt and preparation of monthly bindery shipments, and the library's faculty routing program. Supervises daily work of student workers and back-up staff in check-¬in, claiming, routing, shelf maintenance and all other aspects of serials control and processing.

Detailed Description

Supervises a wide variety of day-to-day serials control and processing tasks, including serials check-in, serials claims, receipt and preparation of monthly bindery shipments, and the library's faculty routing program. Supervises daily work of student workers and back-up staff in check-¬in, claiming, routing, shelf maintenance and all other aspects of serials control and processing. Manages ongoing routing and retrieval of periodical issues as requested by individual professors and communicates regularly with faculty and staff regarding routing of periodicals materials and other serials matters.Supervises the processing and preparation for shelving of newly acquired materials after cataloging or check-in, and performs processing tasks when no staff or student workers are available; trains and supervises staff and student assistants in creating item records and attaching them to bibliographic records in the online catalog, affixing bar codes, producing labels, stamping, and labeling.Searches the OCLC database for bibliographic records of library acquisitions and exports them to the local library system; performs copy cataloging; solves cataloging, classification, and database problems, and participates in special cataloging projects. Is responsible for paying invoices and maintaining related aspects of the library's $1,000,000+ materials budget. Works with the Acquisitions Assistant to resolve problems related to payment of serials invoices.The Acquisitions/Cataloging Assistant is supervised by the Head of Technical Services and receives direction from the acquisitions and cataloging librarians. Supervises other library assistants and students in selected tasks.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education/experience, and four or more years of relevant experience. One year of full time experience may substitute for a year of the required education.At least two years of supervisory experience.At least two years of library technical services experience.Familiarity with standard library procedures.Competency in using computer systems and software, automated library systems,Windows operating, word processing, and spreadsheet applications.Familiarity with Innovative Interfaces software. Strong problem-solving skills. Excellent organizational skills. Good communication skills. Detail orientation. Accuracy in all work. Ability to work unsupervised. Cooperative attitude. Ability to prioritize tasks. Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing work routines and equipment. Ability to complete tasks in the face of interruptions and pressure, and with or without student help. Very good public relations and communications skills Accurate typing and proofreading skills.

Preferred: Familiarity with legal materials.Strong knowledge of LRC collection.Foreign language skills.Knowledge of database management software. Knowledge of looseleaf filing techniques. Knowledge of MARC formats and OCLC.Knowledge of AACR2.Knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings. Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification Schedules. Knowledge of bibliographic control.
