Southeastern Association of AALL
Annual Report 2003-2004

SEAALL members met at the AALL Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, in July 2003 and in Richmond, Virginia, March 25–27, 2004. The theme of our 2004 meeting was “Virginia is For Law Librarians.” Mike Petit and his Program Committee presented a diverse selection of educational programs. The meeting began on Thursday, March 25, with “The Basics of Negotiating” featuring Professor John Douglass. Richmond attorney David Baugh delivered a thoughtprovoking keynote address at the meeting. Other programs focused on issues facing law librarians, including managing staff and libraries effectively, site licenses, cataloging, academic freedom, research in bankruptcy and securities law, and First Amendment concerns.

Local Arrangements Cochairs Tim Coggins and Hazel Johnson planned very lovely events, including a Thursday evening reception above the James River, a Friday evening dinner at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and a Saturday excursion to Jamestown. The events were exceptional, the meals delicious, and everyone praised Tim and Hazel’s attention to detail.

SEAALL committees were active during the year. The Service to SEAALL Committee recognized Jim Heller for his many, many contributions to the association throughout the years. The newsletter, under the direction of Steve Melamut, changed from a print publication to an electronic newsletter. Taylor Fitchett and her Placement Committee communicated the availability of new positions to SEAALL members. Susan Lewis-Somers and her Scholarship Committee did double duty by not only awarding several scholarships, but also creating a new scholarship for students in a library science curriculum. Thanks to Roy Balleste for maintaining the SEAALLWeb site. During the year, Ismael Gullon did an incredible job as our Treasurer. Also, big thanks to Maureen Eggert, Secretary; Amy Osborne and Anne Klinefelter, Board Members; Mike Petit, Vice President; and Past President Terry Long.

Nancy Johnson, President
2003–04
