SFALL Through the Years

1992-1993 Chapter Activity Report for the Law Library Journal

Hurricane Andrew in August of 1992 disrupted the lives of many of our members, so we got off to a slow start. The officers for the 92-93 year were President Billie Jo Kaufman, Vice President/President-Elect Linda Datko, Secretary Linda Mulhall, and Treasurer Beatrice Citron. Following the theme "Putting the Law Back into Law Librarianship", SFALL held three educational programs.

On October 23, 1992, a program on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines featured Faith Mesnekoff and Jackie Rubin of the Federal Public Defender's Office and Maggie Morefield of the U.S. Probation Office. Fifteen members attended the 3/12/93 meeting at the new Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova University. Professor Steve Friedland talked about Nova University's Streetlaw Program. Connie Hankins represented the Carol City Senior High School Center for Legal and Public Affairs and the Florida Law Related Education Association. This program generated questions about the county's Guardian Ad litem Program, offers of law books for the students, and a donation to the FLREA building endowment fund. Because of the interest of the members, the 4/30/93 program featured Joni Goodman, the Circuit Director of the Guardian Ad Litem Program in Dade County. Ruth Parlin, Head of Reference at the University of Miami Law Library outlined ways law librarians could assist the GAL program. We reviewed portions of the Public Services Procedural Guide prepared by the Legal Information Service to the Public SIS. Ten of the 25 people attending the meeting expressed interest in doing pro bono work.

The Holiday Dinner on 12/10/92 brought over 30 members together for great food and an exciting Polynesian floor show. On 6/11/93, 44 of our 113 members attended the annual installation of officers luncheon at the City Club of Miami. The 93-94 officers are President Linda Datko, Vice President/President-Elect Monica Wilson, Secretary Karen Mahnk, and Treasurer Beatrice Citron.
