1999-2000 Chapter Activity Report for the Law Library Journal
The major thrust for SFALL this past year was to strengthen its internal operations, establish a strong fiscal foundation, and build a technology-based infrastructure for our chapter.
To meet these objectives, SFALL's Web site was constructed early in the year by our capable and talented new webmaster, Alfred Holmes. The site sports our new logo, the "Sunburst" design, reflective of South Florida's perpetual sunny climate. A comprehensive set of links was developed to access SFALL's newsletter, membership directory, membership renewal and application form, Board contact information, bylaws, program and meeting announcements, local job listings, and access to Florida legal resources on the Internet. A glossy bookmark advertising the new site was created and distributed to all members. Digital photographs of SFALL activities were also added to the site.
SFALL is now in a partnership arrangement with Amazon.com, thanks to Vice President Terry Seale. A link to Amazon.com was placed on SFALL's Web site to generate additional revenue for our chapter. All members have been encouraged to purchase their books through the site.
A chapter electronic discussion list was created this past year, and the membership directory was thoroughly updated with the addition of active e-mail links. A global SFALL e-mail account was also developed.
Our treasury increased by nearly two-thirds this past year through the diligent effort of Treasurer Diane Altimari in collecting past dues from prior terms, and through the result of former President Clare Membiela's motion to raise our dues from $10 to $20 during the 1997-1998 term.
We continued to provide excellent programs under the direction of Monica Wilson. Our attendance was substantial and grew with every subsequent program, with an average of forty-five attendees out of a membership of one hundred. Programs included "Intranet Management," "The Impact of Internet Subscriptions on Collection Development," and "Copyright Clearance Center: Is it Right for You?"
Our newsletter is now available on SFALL's Web site and in print, and it evolved into a wonderful resource for our members under its new editor, Lisa Smith-Butler. Articles on legal resources on the Internet with hypertext links have been very useful.
SFALL also introduced a "Special Service to SFALL Awards" program. Gift certificates were awarded to Monica Wilson and Sally Haff for their dedication and significant contributions to SFALL through the years.
The chapter year ended with our annual luncheon on June 2, 2000, at Nova Southeastern University Law Library in Ft. Lauderdale. It included a lively discussion by our guest speaker, James Heller, on copyright issues and the CCC. SFALL's officers for 2000-01 were installed: Terry Seale, President; Janet Reinke, Vice President; Diane Altimari, Treasurer; Liz Chifari, Secretary; and Denise Marie Gibson, Immediate Past President.
