SWALL MEMBERS AT THE TWIN CITIES:
A ROUND UP OF THE 2001 AALL ANNUAL MEETING

From July 14 to 19, 2001, the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) held its 94^th annual convention in Minneapolis. The convention in the Twin Cities provided a golden opportunity for SWALL to show off its chapter’s talents, creativity, participation and professionalism. Our members served as speakers, moderators, coordinators or a combination of these roles. All in all, a total of twenty members from Arizona to Texas appeared in seventeen educational programs of the convention. All who showed up in one of these programs deserve a thumbs-up from SWALL. The following is a catalog of what happened to SWALL members at the AALL conference:

Mr. Paul Arrigo, Reference Coordinator/Government Documents and Electronic Services Librarian at Washburn University School of Law Library, Topeka, Kansas, was the coordinator for the program, "Preserving Government Electronic Information: Whose Job Is It?"

Mr. A. Michael Beaird, Director of University of Arkansas at Little Rock/ Pulaski County Law Library, was a speaker on the program, "Getting Published: A How-to Discussion for the Hesitant Cyber Writer and Paper Writer."

Ms. Jessie L. Cranford, Circulation Librarian at University of Arkansas at Little Rock/Pulaski County Law Library, was a panelist on the program called, "Teaching Roles and Realities: Choosing the Legal Research Text That’s Right for You."

Ms. Gail Daly, Associate Dean for Library and Technology at Southern Methodist University Underwood Law Library, Dallas, Texas, was on the panelist for the program named, "Wireless Network: Is It Time to Untether Users?"

Ms. Martha Dragich, Director of University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law Library, spoke on a program entitled, "Unpublished Judicial Opinions, Secret Settlements, and the Judicial System."

Mr. Mark Folmsbee, Associate Dean for Computer Services at Washburn University School of Law Library, Topeka, Kansas, appeared as a speaker on the program, "Key Competencies for the Key Cogs in Your Value Network: Your IT Staff."

Ms. Susan Goldner, Technical Service Librarian, University of Arkansas at Little Rock/Pulaski County Law Library, participated as a speaker on a program called, "Everything Old Is New Again: Second- (or Third) Generation Automated System Challenges."

Mr. Kevin Paul King, of Supreme Court of Oklahoma, was a speaker on the program, "Saving the World’s Digital Law: Learning by Doing."

Ms. June Liebert, Electronic Resources Librarian at University of Texas Jamail Center for Legal Research, Austin, Texas, was a speaker on the program, "The Young and the Restless: What Are the Realities of Professional Growth for Newer Academic Librarians?"

Ms. Marie Mack, Research Specialist/Evening Circulation Librarian at Washburn University School of Law Library, Topeka, Kansas, coordinated and moderated a program, "Law Librarianship Education for New Realities, New Roles." Ms. Joyce McCray Pearson (Jpearson@ku.edu), Director of University of Kansas School of Law Library, Lawrence, Kansas, appeared on this program as a speaker.

Ms. Janet McKinney, Computer Services Librarian at Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP, Kansas City, Missouri, spoke on a program, "Separate but Unequal No More: Integrating Federal Document Collections."

Mr. Robert Mead, Faculty Services/Research Attorney at University of Kansas School of Law Library, Lawrence, Kansas, gave a presentation on his paper ("Unpublished Opinions as the Bulk of the Iceberg: Publication Patterns in the Eighth and Tenth Circuit United States Courts of Appeals") during the program, "AALL-LexisNexis Call for Papers." In Spring 2001, Mr. Mead won a cash award of $750 for his above paper from AALL-LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee.

Ms. Marilyn K. Nicely, Technical Services Librarian at University of Oklahoma Law Library, and Ms. Alma N. Singleton, Director of University of Oklahoma Law Library, jointly appeared on a program, "American Indian Law: the New Reality of Native Sovereignty." Ms. Nicely was the coordinator of that program, whereas Ms. Singleton was a speaker.

Ms. Elizabeth K. Schneider, of Plattner, Schneidman & Schneider in Phoenix, Arizona, coordinated and moderated a program entitled, "The New Realities of the Human Genome Project."

Mrs. Roberta I. Shaffer, the immediate past Dean of University of Texas Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Austin, Texas, was a speaker on the program, "‘Show Me the Money?’ Practical Tips for Negotiating a Salary Increase." Ms. Shaffer has since left UT to become the Executive Director of the Special Libraries Association.

Ms. Susan Skyzinski, Regional Information Manager of LexisNexis, Dallas, Texas, coordinated and moderated a program, "Time Management: There Really Are Enough Hours in the Day!"

Mr. Michael Widener, University of Texas Jamail Center for Legal Research, Austin, Texas, and Mr. Mark W. Lambert, Special Collections and Government Documents Librarian at South Texas College of Law Library, Houston, Texas, had a joint appearance on a program entitled, "Legal Historical Materials in a Nutshell: An Introduction to Legal Archives and Manuscripts." Mr. Widener was a moderator, whereas Mr. Lambert was both a coordinator and speaker.
