Reports
Treasurer Bonnie Gates stated our opening balance (May 2000) as $10,556.56. Our account currently stands at $8647.00. Expenses from the Annual Meeting in Norfolk and from the AALL conference account for the diminished funds. Membership renewals will build our account over the next few months.
Old Business
Donna introduced our Chapter VIP, Mary Mayer Hennelly. Ms. Hennelly expressed her thanks for the invitation to attend AALL and remarked on the tremendous motivation she gained from attending.
New members in attendance were also recognized.
Grants Nancy Loewenberg introduced the AALL grant recipients: James Wirrell from UR and Barbie Selby from UVA. Each will write an article for the next newsletter.
Legislative Awareness Tim Coggins gave a brief overview of the committees work and expressed appreciation for all those who responded so promptly when he and Mary Alice asked for letters and call. Several items are still pending including the Database Bill. Lyn Warmath recently presented the VALL position on UCITA to the General Assembly.
The committee has contacted the SCC regarding improved access and service. Tim plans to write a column for the newsletter to keep everyone informed.
Membership Gail Warren announced that membership renewals had been mailed. She is also working to create a membership database using Access.
Publications Lyn Warmath announced that two members would be writing articles for future issues of the Virginia Lawyer. She encouraged all members to start thinking of ideas for the next "VALL" issue tentatively scheduled for mid-2001. James Wirrell encouraged all to consider writing for the newsletter. Deadline for the next issue is August 1st .
Programs Jill Burr reported that our next meeting will be held on Oct 6th in the Northern Virginia area. Cheryl Jackson will speak on the legislative research in Virginia. Jill is exploring the idea of a joint meeting with LLSDC and VASLA. In January,Marcia Koslov will speak on knowledge management.
Vendor Relations VALL members participated in a pilot project with CRIV by hosting representatives from BNA during a visit to Richmond in June. BNA executives visited Hunton & Williams and the State Law Library. Several VALL members had lunch with the BNA executives and engaged in a dialogue regarding standards and customer service. According to feedback from CRIV, this was an eye opening experience for BNA.
Preservation Sally Wambold said her committee is investigating different types of book repair workshops for the future. In response to meetings with Preston Huff, the committee is now soliciting a list of specific concerns regarding the records retention of electronic resources. Members should forward specifics to Sally. The Virginia Reports project continues to move forward with assistance from UVA.
Donna expressed her thanks to all who attended the AALL roundtable meetings. Tim Coggins and Jill Burr attended the Chapter Advocacy Training session. Ideas from the session will be posted to the VALL webpage.
