This program traces the development of a digitization project focused on Western Law from initiation to completion, and provides a practical case study of what to expect when a library undertakes a digitization project for the first time. The presentation will focus on several key issues: establishing digitization processes and obtaining equipment; funding; gathering permissions; planning; staffing; and using outside sources of assistance. | |

| The Utah State Law Library serves a statewide population--a challenge in a state with very limited access to legal resources, vast rural areas, urban environments, and people from a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, linguistic, educational and economic backgrounds. Utah State Law Library reference librarian Joanne Vandestreek and Self-Help Center director Mary Jane Ciccarello will describe two library programs aimed at addressing the needs of people trying to handle legal matters without the help of an attorney: training for public library staff and the Self-Help Center. | ||

| As libraries seek to keep up with changing user needs, a premium is placed on best uses of library spaces. Yet, remodels are infrequently done, making each such project a first time experience for most involved. This program will recount one library's remodel of stacks floors to produce added and enhanced student work space, including contextual, budgetary and user considerations. The project represents an attempt to respond directly to user needs through an independent, library-controlled process. | ||

We will be visiting the Family History Library, located across the street from the Conference Hotel. The Family History Library is the largest genealogical library in the world and is in the process of digitizing its records. |

This program will take a light-hearted look at the representation of libraries, librarians and research in film and television.
