The American Association of Law Libraries' Western Pacific Chapter will hold its Annual Meeting from October 8-10, 2009 at the Laurel Point Inn in Victoria, British Columbia. This conference is hosted by WestPac and the Diana M. Priestly Law Library, University of Victoria. The local arrangements committee has finalized the programme and social events, which will include presentations and events highlighting current international legal and cultural issues of local and broader significance. Please see our website for further information at http://library.law.uvic.ca/westpac2009. Pre and post conference tours have also been planned.

The Inn at Laurel Point is a lovely, award winning boutique hotel located on Victoria’s inner harbour. The special room rates are available to delegates who register at the hotel BEFORE SEPTEMBER 8, 2009.

These rates are a bargain! Rates at comparable hotels for the dates of our conference start at $150.00 Cdn. Reminder: The special room rates are available to delegates who register at the hotel BEFORE SEPTEMBER 8, 2009. There are many events happening in Victoria on the weekend of our WestPac conference (including the Royal Victoria Marathon with 10 000 runners!) and accommodation options will be extremely limited. Please see http://library.law.uvic.ca/westpac2009/Hotel.html for more information about the hotel, amenities, location, and registration information.

Opportunity and Change: Technology in Law Libraries Law Libraries contend with conflicting influences on their technology policies. Access to legal information is considered fundamental to civil society at the same time that the security of legal institutions and personal legal information is a growing concern. What technology has your library used to bridge the gap?
Submissions are due by Sept, 15, 2009. Please contact Michael Lines for more information.

Events in Victoria: there is lots happening in Victoria during the week of our conference, including a Tony Bennett concert, the Canada/US Women’s National hockey exhibition game, and much more. Visit our tourism page for ideas of things to see and do during your stay. http://library.law.uvic.ca/westpac2009/Tourism.html.

Victoria's mild weather in October makes it an excellent tourist destination for those who may wish to extend their stay. The annual meeting will be held next to the inner harbour, close to the Empress Hotel and the provincial legislature, and is a short trip away from the world famous Butchart Gardens, and the scenic Gulf islands. October is the off-season for tourism, so it is also a good time to take an extended vacation to Pacific Rim National Park. There are also many other options to explore some of the cultural side of the Island, such as First Nations and colonial history, accessible though museums, galleries, and tours. Many family-friendly options exist.
