Frequently Asked Questions

Appellate Court Decisions

The appellate courts include the courts of last resort and intermediate appellate courts. The jurisdiction of the appellate courts varies by state. Decisions may involve civil and criminal cases, interpret statutes, address procedural matters and more.

Some states have official state reporters of decisions who publish the opinions. All published state opinions are available in West's Regional Reporter system. There may be additional publishers of the opinions in print and/or electronic format.

This site is a great example of how a site can be attractive without being cluttered.

  1. Court opinions are available from October 25, 1996 to the present.
  2. Opinions are indexed by date and docket number. There is a keyword search capability.
  3. There are summaries available for selected cases.
  4. The site states that the opinions are subject to modification and indicates where the final, official text can be found.
  5. Other features on the site include the argument docket, judicial biographies, an overview of the court system, court rules, and rule changes.
  6. The persons responsible for each page are listed with email links.
  7. The overall goals of the project are stated, "to provide the broadest possible access," and are well served.
