Library School Events: Get Involved

Get involved with the library school near you, become active in future librarians careers. Locate the nearest library school to your law library. Go to: http://www.ala.org/ to locate the list of ALA accredited programs; find the one(s) closest to you. Then call the Dean of the school and ask to be involved.

Several ideas for being included in your local master program are:

  1. Volunteer your library for internship.
  2. Offer to give day seminars, "A day in the life" of a law tech services librarian, a law reference librarian and so forth.
  3. Offer to give tours of your library.
  4. Offer to come to career day, if one at the school, and talk about law librarianship, bring librarians from different departments.
  5. Offer to become a mentor to library student.
  6. Visit the library school during Banned books and give a talk on the first amendment and its history.
  7. Join with library schools on awareness programs about the Patriot Act, Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other legislation that affects libraries, and their patrons.
  8. Participate in the library school's national library week.
  9. Sponsor a book drive with the library school.

These are just a few suggestions. Put your thinking caps on, be creative, and find a way to become involved in library school students' studies and lives.
