Sweet & Maxwell buy New Law and Legal Market List from Croner.CCH

Leading legal publisher, Sweet & Maxwell today announced the acquisition of New Law and CCH™s legal list from Croner.CCH Group in the UK, for an undisclosed sum. The deal was completed on November 27th 2000. Annual revenues of New Law and the CCH legal list are £4m.

Croner.CCH™s legal practice-focused product line provides commentary on company/commercial law, employment law, financial services and other practice areas. The acquisition of these products ensures Sweet & Maxwell™s strong market position in the commercial law sector.

The transfer of New Law Online, the highly respected daily case reporting service, reinforces Sweet & Maxwell™s commitment to online services. Earlier this year, Sweet & Maxwell launched Westlaw UK, the advanced internet service for lawyers which provides the full text of cases back to 1919, consolidated legislation, journals and a current awareness service. The combination of the two services within the Sweet & Maxwell portfolio positions the company for future growth in the online arena.

In purchasing the list, Sweet & Maxwell will strengthen their relationships with small to medium sized law firms, in-house counsel and the bar.

Wendy Beecham, managing director of Sweet & Maxwell, said:
"The Croner.CCH legal market list, covering areas such as commercial law, employment and financial services, complements our core business and solidifies our market position in these sectors."

"The addition of New Law Online will provide us with a highly respected daily court reporting service which will strengthen our position in the online market, following the highly successful launch of Westlaw UK earlier this year."

"As one of the largest and most respected players in the legal market, Sweet & Maxwell are committed to investing in these products to secure rapid growth and development in new directions."
