1998- The End of Affirmative Action?

The Committee on Diversity's 3d Annual Symposium will be held at the Anaheim Hilton on Saturday, July 11 1998 from 2:30 - 5:00 P.M.  This year's symposium is entitled "Preparing for the Twenty-First Century: The End of Affirmative Action?"

The annual symposiums were designed to bring together AALL members to discuss the many critical issues related to diversity in society.  In this symposium we will address Proposition 209, the 1996 initiative that ended affirmative actin programs in the state and local government in California, and the Hopwood case in Texas.  The controversial case and proposition is being watched closely across the nation, and similar laws face legal challenge in Michigan, Washington, and other states. The speakers/panelists participating on the program are:Ms. Marguerite Butler, Director of the Law Library and Associate Professor of Law, Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law.Mr. Robert Nissenbaum, Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law, Loyola Law School's William M. Rains Library, and a member of the admissions committee at the law school.Ms. Iris M. Lee, law student and Reference Librarian at Howard University School of Law Library.Mr. Michael D. Rappaport, Dean of Admissions at the UCLA School of LawMs. Diane Lindeman, Director of Admissions at the University of Kansas School of Law.

The speakers will address topics including the legal history and legacy of Hopwood and Prop. 209, the impact the case or proposition had on their schools, and the involvement they have in admissions at their respective institutions.  At the end of the presentations there will be a question and answer session.  All AALL members are invited to attend and contribute to this positive discussion. The symposium will be followed by the COD Cocktail Reception from 5:15 - 6:30 p.m. in the Hilton.

There is no charge for the reception, but reservations are requested.  Let's make this third year's effort as great a success as last year.  If you have not registered for the Symposium, please complete the registration form in the Commitee on Diversity Newsletter or on this website.  There is no, registration fee, but early registration in encouraged due to space constraints.
