History

2004- Brown at 50: Promise, Purpose and Potential

The U. S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) is one of the most pivotal opinions ever rendered by that body. This landmark decision highlights the Supreme Courts' role in affecting changes in national and social policy. Often when people think of the case, they remember a little girl whose parents sued so that she could attend an all-white school in her neighborhood. In reality, the story of Brown  is far more complex, and represents a culmination of many legal challenges to the status quo of racial segregation in America.

In recognition of 50th anniversary of the Brown decision, at this year's symposium we will discuss the "promise purpose and potential" of the landmark decision and its implications not only here in the United States, but abroad as well.

Leading up to the symposium we will provide some highlights of different events  and web sites marking the commemoration of Brown's anniversary.
