Annual Reports of the Public Relations Committee

1980-1981

1980-1981 Public Relations Committee

The Public Relations Committee met in St. Louis and agreed on several projects to be explored during the 1980-81 year. Some of the projects and progress to date are as follows:

1. Develop and distribute a survey form to be sent to all chapters, committees, and special interest sections. Purpose: To determine the level of interest in those groups in receiving information or assistance in their public relations activities. The form also included a request to name a liaison contact for each group.

Progress to date: Ginette Polak devised and mailed the form. Out of a possible 56 contacts there were 23 responses. Some of them expressed a definite interest in PR assistance, a few seemed to be doing very well already at the local level. The names of the Liaison contact will be given to the Executive Director.

2. Explore ways and means to acquire a display to be used at various meetings.

Progress to date: Some preliminary work was done by Laura Garrett on the display project however, the idea was tabled by this Committee. This should be reconsidered by a future committee after more deliberation.

3. Start drafting a Public Relations Manual to assist PR work in the various chapters, committees and special interest sections.

Progress to date: Committee member Donald Ziegenfuss has done some work on this project and is continuing to assemble materials and ideas. This project should be actively pursued by the next Committee as it appears to be a useful item for all concerned.

4. Develop an informational brochure to be distributed to law firms and corporations detailing the advantages of including a law librarian in their personnel structure.

Progress to date: Under the guidance of Virginia Kelsh, an artist's conception of a cover design and layout have been done. Textual material submitted by Christine Stevens and Lei Seeger is being edited. These will be submitted to the whole Committee and the AALL Executive Board in Washington and approval sought to have the brochure printed and mailed to the legal community.

The PR Committee has tried to accomplish the goals agreed upon last year and, while some are incomplete, the exploration of ideas has been useful. It is hoped the next PR Committee, and the Executive Director, will benefit from the work done by the Committee this year.
