Annual Reports of the Public Relations Committee

1982-1983

The 1982-1983 Public Relations Committee concentrated its efforts in several different directions. The Committee continued the practice of brochure distribution at the American Bar Association meeting in San Francisco, August 1982, under the auspices of the Section on Law Office Economics, as well through AALL headquarters to those requesting on an individual basis. With assistance from Steve Margeton, AALL liaison to the Association of Legal Administrators, the Committee arranged for our Association to participate for the first time as an exhibitor at the Legal Administrators meeting in New Orleans, April 1983. The exhibit booth contained AALL brochures, publications, and membership applications, a number of which were picked up by interested administrators for their librarians. The Committee also sponsored a drawing as an attraction to the booth. The most positive aspect of this public relations effort, however, came from the law librarians of New Orleans, who gave their time and energies to tend the booth and who enthusiastically support the profession and AALL. In conjunction with exhibiting at future meetings, the Committee has been studying the feasibility of a portable AALL booth, which could be used to exhibit on a national as well as a state and local level by individual chapters at bar meetings or other appropriate opportunities.

The Committee has also worked with the chapters to encourage the publication of articles in state and local bar journals to publicize the profession of law librarianship, the existence and value of chapters, and the national Association. A number of chapters have reported excellent results.

Finally, the Committee has been studying the dynamics of public relations from an internal and an external standpoint for the purpose of setting guidelines and offering direction for future committees.
