Annual Reports of the Public Relations Committee

1983-1984

Using funds allocated by the Executive Committee in 1983, the Public Relations Committee arranged for the design and purchase of an exhibit booth to publicize AALL. This booth is portable and can be used at conventions, chapter meetings, and all other functions where we want to advertise AALL. The booth was completed in January and is being based at the headquarters in Chicago. The scheduling of exhibits for the booth is being coordinated through the Chicago office.

For the first time, the Public Relations Committee arranged to have systematic publicity about winners of AALL grants and scholarships. This year the scholarship and grant application included a space for the applicant to indicate his or her local legal newspaper, so we then were able to send notices to all the appropriate newspapers.

AALL brochures were distributed at the ABA convention in Atlanta by the Section on Legal Economics booth, and the Section has indicated a willingness to continue to cooperate in this fashion. Another Committee activity will be the sponsoring of a panel discussion at the San Diego meeting.

While the goal of the Committee is to encourage local public relations efforts by the chapters throughout the country, the need for systematic, professional publicity on a national level has become increasingly evident. Publicity of such magnitude cannot be accomplished on the committee level, and it is suggested that the Association consider utilizing the services of public relations specialists who will manage our publicity needs in a professional, timely, and consistent manner. Grass roots public relations projects always will be important to our organization, but we may have reached the stage where we require professional services.
