W-1: Swim, Don’t Sink: Immerse Yourself in Law Cataloging

Level: Introductory; 2 days

Competency: Core Competencies for Law Librarianship

Target Audience: Catalogers new to the field of law and those interested in a review of current law cataloging practices

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to identify materials specific to law and apply the special rules in AACR2 to them; handle continuing resources in both paper and electronic forms, including integrating resources; and choose appropriate access points, including uniform titles.
  2. Participants will be able to apply the Library of Congress Classification, Class K schedules and legal subject headings when cataloging materials for their library.

This workshop is aimed at catalogers new to the field of law and those interested in a review of current law cataloging practices. Basic topics in law cataloging are introduced, including the various types of legal materials, the bibliographic description of legal materials and choice of access points and uniform titles, Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Classification, Class K. Continuing resources, including integrating resources, in both paper and electronic form, are covered.
