W-2: What’s in This Box? Managing Archival Collections

Saturday, July 12 • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (8:30 a.m. check-in)

Level: Introductory; Full day

Competency: Collection Care and Management

Target Audience: Librarians who work with archival materials and desire training in Encoded Archival Description

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to explain the principles of organizing archival collections and creating finding aids.
  2. Participants will create an archival finding aid tagged with Encoded Archival Description (EAD) tags.

This one-day workshop has two discrete parts. The morning session will focus on managing archival collections, including: discussion of what archival collections are and who should manage them; effectively arranging and describing collections; creating finding aids; providing physical and intellectual access to these types of materials; and managing collections electronically. The afternoon session will cover Encoded Archival Description (EAD)—the accepted standard for encoding the descriptive information found in archival finding aids that enables researchers to locate and use finding aids electronically. Participants will receive basic instruction and hands-on experience in marking up finding aids with EAD tags.
