Going Green in Portland... and Beyond

Just as AALL’s efforts to maximize the power of the law library community are ongoing and ever-expanding, so too are our efforts to make our Annual Meeting and Conference more "green" and lessen the negative impacts of this event on our environment. We have taken progressive steps in this direction for the past few years and find Portland the ideal place to highlight these endeavors and introduce new ones. Visit our link to green initiatives and find out how AALL, the Oregon Convention Center, the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower (Headquarters Hotel), and our other service contractors are making a difference.

Westin Portland Added to AALL’s Housing Block

The Westin Portland has been added to our hotel offerings in an effort to meet our housing needs in Portland. Located in downtown Portland, this Starwood property is two blocks from the MAX light rail, providing easy access to transportation to the Oregon Convention Center. Housing is still available at our other properties with most rooms available Sunday, July 13 – Wednesday, July 16. There is limited access to early arrival room nights. Schedule your housing now to ensure your accommodations.

Get Involved! Portland Community Service Projects

AALL’s Special Interest Section (SIS) Council is proud to announce its sponsorship of two unique volunteer opportunities in Portland during the Annual Meeting and Conference. The SIS Council is partnering with the Portland Parks and Recreation Community Gardens and the Oregon Food Bank to offer attendees the opportunity to spend a few hours in the community and lend a hand to support our host city. Both projects will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Learn more by visiting the Portland Community Service Projects Web page where you can register to energize your Portland experience!

Let’s Heat Up Portland! Submit a "Hot Topic" Proposal by May 15

There’s still time to submit a proposal for the 2008 "Hot Topic" session. Proposals should consider a late-breaking or otherwise timely topic. Members with ideas about emerging issues that might be suitable for the session should contact Diana Jaque, Annual Meeting Program Committee chair, at 213/740-2632 by May 15.

Volunteer in Portland

Please join your colleagues in volunteering your time to make the Annual Meeting in Portland a success. Although we have had a tremendous response thus far, we still need volunteers for:

  • Family Social Hour (Saturday, July 12)—assisting with travel to the Children’s Museum
  • Dine-arounds (Saturday, July 12)—dine out with colleagues before the Opening Event
  • Opening Reception (Saturday, July 12)—collecting tickets
  • Closing Banquet (Tuesday, July 15)—collecting tickets and seat assistance
  • Hospitality Booth (July 12-15)—help attendees with questions and directions in Portland.

Volunteering is the best way for you to make a direct contribution to the Annual Meeting and to meet your colleagues in a fun and enjoyable manner. For volunteer opportunities in Portland, submit a volunteer form by fax or e-mail to Richard Jost, volunteer chair (phone: 206/543-7686; fax: 206/265-2165).

A Night at the (Children's) Museum

The Children's Museum will be open just for AALL members and their children during the 2008 AALL Family Social Hour on Saturday, July 12, from 5:15-7:30 p.m.

Enjoy pizza and homemade sodas from Hotlips Pizza and then start exploring! Exhibits include the Grasshopper Grocery and Butterfly Bistro, Building Bridgetown, the Dig Pit and more!

AALL has arranged for a group pass to ride the MAX light rail train to and from the Children's Museum. The Family Social Hour Committee will send out an e-mail the week before with specific boarding times, so be sure to include your e-mail address when you register.

Register for this event by the June 6 deadline. We look forward to hosting everyone for a fun and educational "A Night at the (Children's) Museum."

A Book for Every Child

The Social Responsibilities Special Interest Section (SR-SIS) and AALL continue the tradition of giving something back to the community that hosts our Annual Meeting through this, our 10th annual Children’s Book Drive.

The recipient of the 2008 AALL Children’s Book Drive is the Willamette Writers Inc. Books for Kids program. This book donation program collects and distributes more than 23,000 new and used books every year to underprivileged children and teenagers served by more than 50 agencies and organizations throughout Portland, Oregon state, and southwest Washington state.

Donating books is easy! This year we are working with Powell’s Books, a Portland institution since 1971. Visit the AALL Book Drive 2008 Wish List, or you can donate a gift card from Powell’s Books.

All books, gift cards, and monetary donations (checks made out to "AALL") should be sent to:

Mr. Jorge Juarez
Northwestern School of Law
Lewis and Clark College
Paul L. Boley Law Library
10015 S.W. Terwilliger Boulevard
Portland, OR 97219-7799

If you have questions about the Book Drive, please contact one of the members of the SR-SIS Book Drive Team: Ann Hemmens, Jorge Juarez, or Courtney Selby.

Don’t wait! It’s easy to register and reserve your housing online for the Annual Meeting and Conference!
