96th AALL Annual Meeting & Conference
96th AALL Annual
Meeting & Conference

July 12 - 16, 2003
Seattle, Washington

The AALL Annual Meeting and Conference is the premier educational and networking event for the law library community. Legal information professionals can take advantage of an array of educational programs to learn new techniques to maximize success in today's fast-paced ever changing world, and the Pacific Northwest presents a wonderful setting to explore foreign and international law issues. In addition to the traditional educational programs, new thirty-minute program sessions will be introduced at the Seattle Annual Meeting. These short "mini-sessions" are designed to provide more flexibility for AALL components in creating programming to fulfill the educational needs of their members. They are also well suited for trying out alternative or creative presentation formats or technology demonstrations.

The Annual Meeting and Conference provides an excellent opportunity to plan and influence the possibilities of tomorrow as attendees interact with a wide range of colleagues who share similar interests and responsibilities. Seasoned experts need educational programs to help maintain the level of excellence demanded in today's workplace, while now more than ever we need to look beyond the challenges of today to envision ways to influence and shape tomorrow. The following Competencies of Law Librarianship will be featured to provide the focus the 2003 Annual Meeting:

 Teaching

A primary goal of the Annual Meeting is to provide librarians with the tools and techniques for success in all work environments. Attendees may have the opportunity to

  • Enhance abilities to teach legal research and substantive law courses to law students in a traditional classroom setting.
  • Learn new techniques to teach summer interns, practicing attorneys, judges and clerks in the real world.
  • Maximize efficient and effective legal research skills that affect cases, decisions and the bottom line.
  • Improve techniques to teach and train new employees and colleagues.

 Collection Care and Management

Technical and Access Services librarians face many challenges today. In addition to educational programs designed to maintain the standards of excellence demanded in today's workplace, special interest meetings and networking opportunities maximize the benefits of the Annual Meeting experience. Listed below are just a few potential reasons to attend the Annual Meeting.
  • Sharpen management skills
  • Develop workflows incorporating electronic and print resources
  • Explore new ways to blend the online catalog and web page
  • Share techniques for coping with shrinking collection budgets, negotiating and dealing with vendors and other collection resource challenges.

Technology - Focus on the future

Ten years ago few had heard of the Internet. In a relatively short time it has revolutionized the way we think, work and seek information. These are some of the questions that might be explored.

  • Can anyone envision the impact the Internet will have during the next five years?
  • How will legal information be accessed and utilized?
  • How will organizations operate?
  • What skills and qualifications will be required to serve the needs of library patrons, clients and users, wherever they might be?

Participate in the Seattle Annual Meeting and Conference as we position ourselves as leaders in information, research, management and technology - today and tomorrow!
