Disney's Animal Kingdom & Discovery Island
       

In 1989, Walt Disney Company Chairman Michael Eisner challenged his "Imagineering" team to create a new theme park that would center around animals, the environment and conservation.  The result is Disney's Animal Kingdom, opened to the public on Earth Day 1998, and considered one of the finest zoos in the country.  The park's layout is similar to a wheel.  In the center of this 100-acre park is Discovery Island and its "Tree of Life" (a 145 foot Baobab tree, native to Africa); inside the Tree of Life is the Bug's Life attraction!  Outlying "lands" include Africa, home to the Kilimanjaro Safaris and Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, and Asia, featuring the Kali River Rapids and "Flights of Wonder" exotic bird show. Disney's Animal Kingdom features live animals, rides, shows and exhibits.  Plan to arrive early when the animals are outside and active.  One of the most popular attractions is the Safari ride through the "African Serengeti."  Since a majority of the attractions are outdoors, dress accordingly for the heat, humidity and possible late afternoon showers.
