Joseph Plumbar is an Acquisitions and Reference Librarian at The Fred Parks Law Library, South Texas College of Law.
Why did you join AALL?
I joined AALL because it was the first organization introduced to me by my Associate Director. AALL is the best way to connect and solicit advice from experienced law librarians that training manuals do not provide.
Why do you stay a member?
Why not? AALL offers many resources for law librarians at all stages of their career. Remaining a member is the best way to remain connected to the evolution of our profession.
What one membership benefit is most valuable to you?
What is your favorite memory associated with AALL?
C-O-N-E-L-L. I attended AALL for the first time in Philadelphia and was overwhelmed by the size of the conference. I met a law librarian (i.e. Lisa Goodman) who said next time you attend sign up for CONELL. I listened and attended CONELL this year in Seattle and had a blast. From speed networking to the tour of Seattle it was a great experience. I met people that I will keep in contact with for a very long time and whom I share the same passions about the profession.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
What don’t I enjoy? When I am not at work, the first place I anticipate being is at my Crossfit box (gym). My addiction to Crossfit is so bad my whole day is scheduled around it. When I am not “crossfitting” I am in my kitchen creating recipes and trying out new juice mixtures with my juicer. I also enjoy traveling and lounging on any beach with beautiful water. I watch and participate in tennis, football (“WHO DAT”), figure skating, and volleyball. Oh and how could I forget red tag hunting a/k/a shopping? Nothing thrills me like finding a great bargain whether it’s a new pair of shoes or a new kitchen gadget. Need sale schedules? I am the one to contact.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
Currently I have four unfinished books sitting on my desk at home. Twelve Years a Slave, Think and Grow Rich, Howling at the Moon, and The Soundtrack of My Life all of which are different. I skipped ahead in Soundtrack of My Life by Clive Davis because I wanted to read the chapter about Whitney Houston. Everyone who knows me knows I consider Whitney Houston the greatest recording artist of our generation. Frankly, I am her number one fan!
What’s your favorite travel/vacation destination?
I do not have a favorite because I have not been everywhere on my “get there” list but I think anywhere other than my townhome is my favorite travel/vacation destination. The misconception from the past sentence is that I do not like where I live but reality is I love new adventures and exploration of new places.
