Leanna Simon is a Reference Librarian at Honigman Miller Schwartz & Cohn LLP in Detroit.
Why did you join AALL?
I joined AALL because I am a new law librarian. It seemed like a good way to jump into my new career. I wanted to learn the trade secrets, network, and find out exactly what makes law librarianship special.
Why do you stay a member?
AALL may have been something I joined initially because I thought that it went along with my new career, but I stay because of what it offers its members. I have made invaluable connections with peers I would have never otherwise known, and regularly use a whole host of resources that are only available to those who are a part of the organization. Law librarianship is a profession that does not benefit from isolation and a part of being connected is maintaining your membership in the AALL.
What one membership benefit is most valuable to you?
The SIS groups and the networking that comes from those is what I find I benefit from the most. I like knowing that I am not the only law librarian dealing with certain issues. I can go to those groups with questions and topics and receive great feedback.
What is your favorite memory associated with AALL?
As a new law librarian, I went to CONELL in Boston 2012. My favorite part was where we teamed up in separate groups and met with a member of the Executive Board. It gave me a chance to meet others in a relaxed setting and actually have a conversation with someone who knew the ropes and others who were in the same situation I was in. It helped to solidify my confidence and give me some initial contacts with whom I could rely on for support. Good times!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy hanging out with my husband, playing my video games (WoW), photography, gardening- roses and a massive amount of vegetables, spinning, and plowing through seasons of television shows on Netflix. I also have season tickets to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and enjoy traveling when I can.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
I am currently reading Cloud Atlas
that I received for Christmas. So far so good. I love the multiple story lines and the themes that connect them. I have also spent a lot of time looking through my new Detroit guide- Belle Isle to 8 Mile: An Insider's Guide to Detroit
. As a new Detroiter- it is an invaluable resource to get to know my new neighborhood.
What’s your favorite travel/vacation destination?
London, UK- hands down. I love the people, culture, and just feel of that city. The London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Notting Hill, rain, museums, Primark- the list just goes on for me. I would go back multiple times a year if I could. Maybe one day I will be a citizen.
