Sara Thomas is head librarian at Miles Stockbridge PC in Baltimore and joined AALL in 2009. She has worked in law firms since 2001 and became a law librarian in 2010 after earning her MLS from Pratt Institute in 2009. She is currently secretary for the Law Library Association of Maryland.
Why did you join AALL?
I joined AALL while I was in library school because I knew I wanted to be a law librarian. I was working as a legal secretary at a law firm and was friendly with the librarian. He encouraged me to join so that I could meet and network with other law librarians while attending local events.
Why do you stay a member?
I stay a member because it’s an invaluable organization! It helps me stay connected with people and issues that are important to my job – every day!
What one membership benefit is most valuable to you?
I love the special interest sections (I belong to Private Law Librarians (PLL) and my local chapters, Law Library Association of Maryland (LLAM) and Law Librarians' Society of Washington, D.C. (LLSDC)). The ability to be a part of smaller groups within the larger organization makes it feel less daunting and overwhelming. If I didn’t have access to the LLAM and LLSDC discussion lists, I don’t know how I would function!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I’m an avid reader (as librarians, aren’t we all!), and I try to devour as many books as possible. I am the mom to a 19-month-old toddler and have another on the way (due in February). All of my joy comes from seeing my baby learn her way through the world!
What book(s) are you currently reading?
On my Kindle, I’m currently reading In the Garden of Beasts
(Erick Larson) for the second time. In print, I’m reading a couple of parenting books and Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer
(Novella Carpenter). I can’t forget the wide variety of children's books that my daughter and I spend reading every evening after I come home from work. Our favorites are Make Way for Ducklings
, Harry the Dirty Dog
, and If You Were My Baby
. I’m also anxiously awaiting the release of Book #2 in Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy (The Winter of Our World
) … next week!
What’s your favorite travel/vacation destination?
I love to spend time at our family’s cottage on the Eastern Shore of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Only during the summer, though!
