TYPE: Special Committee

PURPOSE: To identify and evaluate existing law library programs and strategies for enhancing citizens' access to the justice system; to suggest new practices or projects for law libraries to adopt that will facilitate access to justice; and to draft a "white paper" for circulation to the legal community that describes the existing and prospective roles all types of law libraries play in fostering access to justice.

CHARGE: The Special Committee will:

  • Survey AALL member libraries to identify services that assist self-represented litigants and underserved populations.
  • Analyze potential gaps in the provision of legal information services to these groups.
  • Draft "best practices" for all types of law libraries to participate in the "access to justice" movement.
  • Create a "white paper" for broad circulation illustrating the topics listed above.

The Special Committee shall submit its white paper to the Executive Board at its July 2014 meeting.

SIZE: Chair, plus six members. In addition, the Chair of the SCCLL-SIS, Chair of the LISP-SIS, and the Director of Government Relations will serve in ex officio roles.

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER COMMITTEES/STRUCTURES: The Special Committee will solicit input and feedback from AALL Special Interest Sections, chapters, caucuses, and committees.
