2010 AALL Annual MeetingLast month AALL members voted for the two Annual Meeting programs they'd like to see live-streamed over the web in addition to our Opening General Session/Keynote Speaker presentation. I am pleased to announce the full winning lineup:

You'll be able to access the programs on each day of the webcasts through AALL2go, our online learning center. If you can't watch the programs live, archived webcasts of the programs will be available free to members after the conference. Whether you're attending our conference in Denver or tending to your job back at the office, you can be part of the audience!

New in 2010—The AALL Placement Office Goes Digital!

The AALL Placement Committee is proud to offer for the first time online job and candidate searching as part of the Placement Office at the AALL Annual Meeting and Conference in Denver. Posting through the AALL Career Center offers many benefits to employers and job seekers. Best of all, you don't have to be in the Placement Office, and you don't even have to be in Denver for the AALL Conference to take part in the action.

Job seekers can post their resumes online at any time, and resume posting and job searching is free for job seekers. For employers, we are offering a special 10-day package on the Career Center during the conference at a rate of $50 for AALL members. This package may be purchased starting July 5. Alternatively, employers can purchase 30- or 60-day packages at the regular Career Center rates. Be sure to note on your resume or job posting if you plan to be in Denver for the AALL conference and will be interviewing.

CRIV and the AALL Vendor Liaison

There has been some cyber-chatter this week regarding the Executive Board's decision to create an AALL Vendor Liaison position, and I wanted to take this opportunity to address some of the issues raised by interested members.

The Vendor Liaison position was approved by the Executive Board in November 2008. The approval was based on a report and recommendations made by AALL member Penny Hazelton, a past AALL president and director of the University of Washington Law Library and the University of Washington Law Librarianship Program. Hazelton had been retained by AALL as a consultant in June 2008. The Executive Board asked her to study the vendor relations issues facing AALL and advise regarding the creation of a Vendor Liaison position. After conducting her research, Hazelton recommended a Vendor Liaison position be created by the Executive Board.

After a search and interviews, Marian Parker, associate dean for information services, director of the professional center library, and professor of law at Wake Forest University School of Law, was selected as the AALL Vendor Liaison in April 2009. This is a part-time volunteer position with an honorarium. Parker has just completed her first year of service in this capacity. The Executive Board recognized when the position was created that it would be crucial to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of the vendor liaison, the Committee on Relations with Information Vendors (CRIV), and the Executive Board.

During this transition year, both Parker and CRIV have been active and worked hard, and the committee members should feel proud of their accomplishments. It was regrettable that two valued members resigned from the committee. During this past year, CRIV and the vendor liaison have worked together to clarify ambiguities and establish mutually productive working relationships.

There were concerns voiced by some members of the committee that the new vendor liaison would diminish the role of CRIV. Of course, this was not the intent of the Executive Board in creating this position. The board's view, after months of study and consultation, was that an AALL vendor liaison would provide more legitimacy for CRIV, giving vendor issues more priority, and reinforcing the importance of these issues for the Association. Consistency when dealing with vendor issues at a policy level is difficult with annual turnover of Association leadership. The vendor liaison will provide continuity and can assist CRIV in carrying out its charge.

The new 2010-13 AALL Strategic Directions plan clearly demonstrates the importance AALL places on vendor relations. CRIV will be a critical participant in the conversation. It has been a challenging year for all of us, and as with any change, it has been necessary to make adjustments as we learn how we can most effectively work together. I think we are off to a good start. AALL members can expect that CRIV and the AALL vendor liaison will continue to work cooperatively to represent our members and the law library profession on important matters relating to vendor relations.

AALL2go Pick of the Month

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Competitive Intelligence on a Shoestring.

AALL2goThis hour-long MP3 recording begins with speaker Susan Armstrong of Business Financial Services. She provides a definition of competitive intelligence (CI), i.e., what is going on that can affect your company or industry. No competitor is going to lay out its entire plan to make things easy for you. You must look for indicators. Armstrong's examples include, what does it mean if you find that a supermarket is advertising to hire bankers? For Armstrong's industry, it presaged banks opening in supermarkets. Or, if your research indicates that new personnel are being hired in a specific division of a competitor's company, then it might mean the company is going to branch out in a new direction that you, as its competitor, want to know about. Armstrong then outlines how to package and disseminate the information you gather to give it your stamp.

Next, speaker Sabrina Pacifici, author of the well-known LLRX and Bespacific, describes how to use her respected and frequently updated Competitive Intelligence: A Selective Research Guide for gathering free and/or inexpensive data about competitors. To begin, she closely examines the Microsoft and Bayer corporate websites for the many types of useful CI information they contain. She goes on to review a large number of sites from her CI list that accumulate and aggregate company data.

Have a Great Idea for a Program in 2011? It's Not Too Soon to Plan.

2011 AALL Annual MeetingOur Denver conference fast approaches, but next year's Annual Meeting in Philadelphia is on the horizon. The 2011 Annual Meeting Program Committee is seeking proposals that feature concrete, practical ideas and case studies about library services and information resources. Armed with fresh insights into existing challenges, we want our members to take away new knowledge and skills that they can apply in their libraries and in their career paths.

In Philadelphia, we will be using program tracks based on the updated Competencies of Law Librarianship to assist members in finding the programs that best suit their needs. You may use the online Program and Workshop Proposal Collection site to develop your proposal in your own workspace, share it with your colleagues, and submit it online by the newly-extended September 15 deadline. AALL and NOALL Send Letter in Support of Louisiana State University's MLIS Program

On June 3, AALL and the New Orleans Association of Law Libraries (NOALL) sent a joint letter to the Louisiana State University (LSU) Board of Supervisors to oppose the recommendation announced by Chancellor Michael Martin on May 24 to eliminate the MLIS program at LSU. The letter states that while we understand that the current fiscal crisis facing Louisiana necessitates a review of the university's academic programs, we believe this shortsighted decision will have a serious negative impact on the citizens of Louisiana, especially those in underserved populations. In addition to myself, the letter was signed by AALL Immediate Past President James Duggan, NOALL President Brent Hightower, and NOALL Immediate Past President Miriam Childs. All four of us are proud graduates of LSU's School of Library and Information Science.

Peggy Roebuck Jarrett Appointed to Depository Library Council

Public Printer Robert C. Tapella announced on June 3 the appointment of five new members to the Government Printing Office's (GPO's) Depository Library Council, including AALL member Peggy Roebuck Jarrett. The council is composed of 15 members, each of whom serves a three-year term and advises the public printer on policy matters relating to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). Jarrett joins AALL members Sally Holterhoff and Camilla Tubbs on the council. Victoria Trotta is completing her final year.

Jarrett is documents and reference librarian at the University of Washington Gallagher Law Library. Working at the library since 1990 and in this position since 1994, she has overseen the library's participation in the FDLP, including its successful transition to an increasingly electronic program. The Gallagher Law Library was the first law library to be recognized in GPO's 2009 November Depository Library Spotlight for its exemplary services and innovations in providing free public access to government information. Congratulations, Peggy!

Joan M. Bellistri, law librarian at the Anne Arundel County Public Law Library in Annapolis, Maryland, was awarded the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland 2010 Maryland Pro Bono Service Herbert S. Garten Special Project Award for her "Ask a Lawyer in the Library" program. She received the award at the Maryland State Bar Association Business Meeting on June 5.

Julie Bozzell, deputy chief knowledge officer at Hogan Lovells US LLP, and Cameron Gowan, library manager at Groom Law Group, Chartered, both in Washington, D.C., have graduated with Masters in Law Firm Management from The George Washington University College of Professional Studies.

Erin Hoffrance graduated from the University of Washington with an MLIS in June. She is also the new assistant for research and information services at Keller Rohrback LLP in Seattle, Washington. She was previously reference assistant at K&L Gates LLP.

On May 27, Northern California Association of Law Libraries (NOCALL) volunteers Claudia Cook, Jessica Corcoran, Craig Griffith, Julie Horst, Tricia Lee, Matthew Kaminski, and Holly Riccio staffed the phones during the KQED pledge drive. KQED is Northern California's local National Public Radio/Public Broadcasting System station. On the night they volunteered, the station received 530 calls and raised over $37,000. Memorials

AALL has been advised of the death of Kai-Yun Chiu.

Ms. Chiu was born in Kai-Yun, China. In 1959, she moved to San Francisco and earned a bachelor's degree from Holy Names University in Oakland, California, and an MLS from the University of California at Berkeley. She later earned a second master's degree in administrative science from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Ms. Chiu worked at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore until 1968 when she became head of the government documents department at Johns Hopkins University. In 1976, she began working at the Library Company of the Baltimore Bar, where she remained for almost three decades. Ms. Chiu was a co-founder in 1986 of the Subscription Libraries Roundtable, a national organization of law libraries. A long-time member of AALL, Ms. Chiu was active in the Legal History and Rare Books Special Interest Section; the State, Court, and County Law Libraries Special Interest Section; and the Asian American Law Librarians Caucus. She died on May 29.
