Joyce Manna JantoAside from losing weight, one of the most popular resolutions people make every year is to learn something new. And with the help of AALL, this is one resolution that you will have no problem keeping. Registration for the AALL Annual Meeting begins next month. You will have the chance to register for four workshops, 64 programs, and the 24 special interest section programs in Philadelphia. In addition, AALL is sponsoring a webinar on Strategic Knowledge Management in February and the Management Institute in April. We have also arranged discounted rates for AALL members to attend the Legal Marketing Association annual conference in April.

Another popular resolution is to take up a hobby. Why not photography? The 2011 "Day in the Life" photo contest starts on February 1. And finally, it is my sad duty to inform you of the deaths of several of our colleagues. The Association has lost four members who were vital contributors to our profession and who will be mourned by many: Marianne Sidorski Alcorn, Earl Charles Borgeson, Morris L. Cohen, and Margaret Tranne Pearce.

2011 Annual Meeting Registration Opens Next Month

2011 AALL Annual MeetingRegistration for the 2011 AALL Annual Meeting and Conference, to be held in Philadelphia, July 23-26, will open in early February. Watch for an email announcing the opening with instructions for easy online registration. AALL's educational programming is now available for viewing online and will continue to be updated in the weeks to come. You can filter the many programs and workshops in a number of ways to best meet your needs.

The four days of valuable educational programming cover topics that include managing library costs, improving efficiency, and getting noticed as the professional you are. Here are a few of the many programs that will be offered in Philadelphia:

You can now find registration rates online, including a convenient single conference rate. You can also view this year's conference schedule, reflecting some exciting changes – including two new events on the Exhibit Hall floor: the Exhibit Hall Ribbon Cutting/Opening Reception on Saturday, July 23, from 5 – 6:30 p.m., and the Closing Reception on Tuesday, July 26, from 1:30 – 3 p.m.

Once again, we are pleased to offer a complimentary one-year AALL membership for non-AALL members who purchase the conference registration package. If your colleagues are not yet part of the AALL community – but should be – please let them know!

Baish Joins GPO as Assistant Public Printer

Mary Alice BaishMary Alice Baish, AALL director of government relations, has been named the assistant public printer (superintendent of documents) for the U.S. Government Printing Office. Baish was selected for the position by Public Printer William J. Boarman. In her new position, Baish will be responsible for three programmatic areas: library services and content management (including the Federal Depository Library Program); publication and information services (including the sales program); and the Federal Digital System (FDsys). Baish will assume her new responsibilities on Monday, January 31.

Baish has served on AALL's staff since February 1995 and has been instrumental in building AALL's successful government relations program. She has been a strong advocate on issues related to law librarianship, and this appointment is a fitting tribute to her leadership in these important policy areas.

AALLNET Redesign Update

I'm happy to report that we are in the homestretch leading to the launch of the new AALLNET. AALL Headquarters is currently working on the final stages of integrating the new website with the membership database to allow members to renew memberships and update their profiles, as well as allow new members to join. Next week we will begin testing the new site with staff and select committees, and in February we will widen testing to more volunteer members. Depending on testing outcomes, the site will launch shortly after testing is complete.

I thank you for your patience, as the website redesign has taken longer than anticipated. However, I'm confident that you will all welcome the new look and functionality of AALLNET 2.0. AALL Awards Deadline Approaching: February 1

The AALL Awards Committee annually recognizes the accomplishments of AALL members and others who excel in assuring access to legal information and who have shown their commitment and dedication to the law library profession. Recipients of all awards will be recognized at the 2011 AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. This is the first year that new members of the AALL Hall of Fame can be nominated by the membership.

AALL will consider candidates for a number of awards, including the following. (Those decided by the Awards Committee are indicated by an asterisk.)

A Day in the Life Photo Contest 2011 Starts February 1

Get ready for your close up. A Day in the Life of the Law Library Community Photo Contest starts on February 1 (less than two weeks away).

Day in the LifeDuring the month of February, AALL members are invited to take a wide range of photographs of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given day. Entries are due by the end of the month, and they will be judged online through membership voting in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in an issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.

New this year the contest will be conducted on Flickr, which will allow you to see submissions as they are posted by other members. Visit the Day in the Life site for complete contest rules, photography tips, and to view the winning photos from 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009.



AALL/BNA Continuing Education Grant Awards and Upcoming Deadlines

Congratulations to the San Diego Association of Law Libraries and the New Orleans Association of Law Libraries, who have recently received AALL/BNA Continuing Education Grant awards.

The Call for Papers Has Begun

Have you been thinking of writing an article of interest to law librarians? The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee has just the incentive to get started. The committee is soliciting articles in three categories.

Open Division: For active and retired AALL members and law librarians with five or more years of professional experience.

New Members Division: For recent graduates and AALL members who have been in the profession for less than five years.

Student Division: For students in library, information management, or law school. Participants in this division need not be members of AALL. To submit in this category, you must have been enrolled in law school or in a library school, information management, or equivalent program either in the fall 2010 or spring 2011 semester.

Submissions in the Open and New Members Divisions must be submitted by March 1. Articles in the Student Division must be submitted by April 15.

The winner in each division receives $750 generously donated by LexisNexis, plus the opportunity to present the winning paper at a program at the 2011 AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Winning papers are also considered for publication in Law Library Journal.

2010 AALL/Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grants Funds Research Project

The AALL Research Committee is pleased to announce that the 2010 AALL/Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant Program has funded a research grant. John Cannan, research and instructional services librarian at the Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law Legal Research Center in Philadelphia has been awarded $1,200 for his project, "The Drupal Constitutional History Project."

The Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant Program was first established in 1996 with a generous contribution of $50,000. Wolters Kluwer Law & Business considers its contribution as an investment in research that provides a prospective look at the role of librarians, researchers, and legal information providers and yields results to which publishers can respond. The goal is to sponsor research that has a practical impact on the law library profession and inspires products and changes in the marketplace.

Two New Caucuses Join AALL

Two new groups have joined AALL's expanding list of caucuses—groups within the Association dedicated to specialized causes.

The Animal Law Caucus was formed in 2010 to support the efforts of law librarians, academics, and practitioners in the research, teaching, scholarship, and practice of animal law. Its purpose is to recognize and further the ongoing work of AALL members in this growing area of law. For more information, contact Marie Erickson.

The Empirical Research Caucus is organized to encourage law librarians to expand their knowledge of trends in empirical research, empirical research methods, and multidisciplinary resources related to legal topics and research and provide a forum for sharing knowledge related to empirical research, including development and archiving of data, availability of existing data, and requirements for institutional review boards. AALL Spectrum Wants New "Views"

Since October 2004, AALL Spectrum has been publishing photos of your views from your libraries. Starting with Volume 16 (September/October 2011), Spectrum is expanding the "Views from You" section to include views of your library. So get out your camera and send us pics of your library building, the view from your reference desk, or even a moment captured on your morning commute.

Digital submissions must be at least 5 inches high by 3.5 inches tall at 300 dpi, and landscape orientation is preferable. Consult the "Views from You" section in Spectrum for more detailed guidelines. To submit a photo, or if you have questions, please contact AALL Marketing and Communications Manager Hillary Baker at hbaker@aall.org.

ALA Creates Haiti Library Relief Fund

January 12 marked the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The American Library Association (ALA) has created a Haiti Library Relief Fund to help rebuild libraries that were destroyed by the earthquake.

ALA has chosen to raise funds for three libraries: the Petit Goave Public Library, the Centre Culturel Pyepoudre Community Library, and the Bibliothèque haïtienne des Pères du Saint-Esprit, which was founded in 1873 and held resources documenting the history of Haiti, French colonization, slavery, and emancipation.

So far, ALA has raised and sent more than $25,000 to help clear and prepare land and create designs for new facilities. Unfortunately, much more is needed, as the estimated cost to rebuild just the Petit Goave Public Library is $350,000. If possible, please donate to the ALA's Haiti Library Relief Fund.

Legal Marketing AssociationThis year AALL is an association partner for the 2011 Legal Marketing Association (LMA) Annual Conference, held in Orlando April 4-6. It is the largest educational and networking event for legal marketing and business development professionals. Through the partnership, AALL members are entitled to receive the LMA member rate when registering. Mention that you are an AALL member when registering to receive the LMA full member rate. The registration deadline is February 25.

David G. Badertscher, principal law librarian at the New York Supreme Court Criminal Term, First Judicial District, and Deborah E. Melnick, principal law librarian at the Civil Court of the City of New York, published an article, "Is Primary Legal Information on the Web Trustworthy?" in the Fall 2010 issue of Judges' Journal.

Martin Cerjan joined the St. John's University Law School faculty as associate dean for library and technology services and associate professor of legal research. For the past eight years, he was assistant dean, law library director, and assistant professor of law at Vanderbilt University Law School.

Mary Koshollek, director of information and records services at Godfrey & Kahn S.C., was honored by the Wisconsin Law Journal on November 12, 2010, as a 2010 Unsung Hero. Koshollek was honored in the law librarian category as the Law Librarian of the Year.

Mary Whisner, reference librarian at the University of Washington Gallagher Law Library in Seattle, was quoted in Leslie Savan's January 10 The Nation article, "Killing the 'Killing' Words." The Green Bag also named Whisner as a 2010 Exemplary Legal Writing honoree in the short article category for her Law Library Journal piece, "Enact Locally."

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the deaths of Marianne Sidorski Alcorn, Earl Charles Borgeson, Morris L. Cohen, and Margaret Tranne Pearce.

Ms. Sidorski Alcorn was a dedicated and tenacious law librarian who served the Arizona State University (ASU) Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law for 30 years as head of reference and faculty services. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and her MLS from the University of Southern California. She was a reference librarian at the Marian Gallagher Law Library at the University of Washington before joining ASU in 1981 and taught legal research in the Center for Executive Development, College of Business, at ASU for five years. As an AALL member, Ms. Alcorn was active on numerous committees and special interest sections. She also served as a board member and president (2001-2002) of the Arizona Association of Law Libraries. Ms. Alcorn died December 26.

Earl Charles Borgeson was the first of his family to attend college and graduated from the University of Minnesota. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines, he received his LLB from the University of Minnesota Law School. After law school, Mr. Borgeson received his MLL from the University of Washington and began his career as a reference librarian at the Los Angeles County Law Library. He subsequently served for 18 years as professor of law and librarian at Harvard Law School. Mr. Borgeson also worked as associate director of libraries at Stanford University before completing his career as professor of law and librarian at Southern Methodist University School of Law where he and his wife served as host family for several students from China and Taiwan. He was active in AALL and was a 1988 recipient of the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Borgeson died on December 25.

Mr. Cohen was one of the towering figures of late 20th century law libraries and among the foremost legal bibliographers in the United States, as well as a beloved teacher and mentor. He was a professor of law and director of the law library at Yale Law School from 1981 until his retirement in 1991, when he became Professor Emeritus of Law and Professorial Lecturer in Law. Before joining Yale, he served as director of the law libraries at Harvard from 1971 to 1981, the University of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1971, and SUNY-Buffalo from 1961 to 1963. Mr. Cohen's scholarly work was largely in the field of legal research and historical bibliography. His published books include: Bibliography of Early American Law, Supplement to Bibliography of Early American Law, The Bench and Bar: Great Caricatures from Vanity Fair, and A Guide to the Early Reports of the Supreme Court of the United States. He served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and to numerous law schools and legal organizations in the United States and abroad. Mr. Cohen also served as president of AALL from 1970-1971. He was educated in the public schools of New York City; at the University of Chicago (BA); Columbia Law School (JD); Pratt Institute School of Library Service; and Dalhousie University (LLD, honorary). Mr. Cohen died on December 18.

Ms. Tranne Pearce was born in San Bernadino, California, and grew up in California and Kansas. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1964, earned a bachelor's degree at Kansas University, and an MLS at Emporia State Teacher's College. Her work career included law librarianship at Kansas State University, George Washington University, the Appellate Court in St. Louis, and the Federal Court System in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a member of AALL and the State, Court, and County Law Libraries Special Interest Section. Ms. Pearce died on January 4.
