Joyce Manna JantoJuly is an exciting time for AALL - the Annual Meeting marks the beginning and the end of the working year of the Association. Old committees meet for the last time to wrap up business, while new committees meet to set their agenda for the coming year. Executive Board members are honored for their service, while new board members undergo orientation to become familiar with their new roles.

This July e-newsletter highlights some of these changes along with bringing news of some totally new endeavors. The most exciting of these is the migration of AALL's discussion lists to the My Communities feature on AALLNET. The necessary changes to your profile are simple and outlined below. Take the five minutes needed to do so right now and keep your AALL messages coming!

Another exciting new endeavor is the presentation of the Gallagher Awards and the Hall of Fame Awards at the Business Meeting. Please join me there to honor the leaders of our profession. Finally there is news about two of AALL's most popular publications. The AALL Salary Survey was distributed July 7 and responses are due August 1. Please fill out this survey to provide your colleagues with this valuable information. The 2010 Price Index for Legal Publications is now available for members on AALLNET. This year, information for all of the major publishers is included.

New Act Provides for Authenticating Official State Online Legal Material

I am extremely pleased that the Uniform Law Commission (ULC) approved the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act.

When the commissioners met in Vail earlier this month to consider its approval, they also received an Issues Memorandum and the May 24 draft of the act, which included a prefatory note and comments.

The act requires that official electronic legal material be:

  • Authenticated, by providing a method to determine that it is unaltered
  • Preserved, either in electronic or print form
  • Accessible,for use by the public on a permanent basis

ULC will make the final version of the act, including the prefatory note and comments, available in August or September.

AALL's 2007 Authentication Summit, convened by then president Sally Holterhoff, inspired the act, which is the culmination of many years of work by many AALL members. One of AALL's primary goals is to ensure that official digital legal materials will be preserved and that authentic copies of the materials will be made available at no cost to the public. The passage of this act will help us attain this important goal.

Barbara Bintliff, a past president of AALL, served as the drafting committee reporter and deserves our thanks for her hard work over many months. Thanks also to Keith Ann Stiverson, the AALL observer who attended the drafting committee meetings on our behalf.

2011 Online Salary Survey Responses due August 1

On July 7, the questionnaires for the 2011 version of the AALL Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics were emailed to all law library directors and heads of law libraries.

You may complete the entire survey online by following the link provided in the email. You also may save your answers and return as often as you need until August 1 using your email address and unique password. If you prefer to complete the survey in writing, you may download and print a PDF version of the questionnaire.

The Biennial Salary Survey is an important resource for AALL members, especially in today's economic climate. To ensure detailed salary breakdowns that members need, we strongly urge all who receive the questionnaire to participate in the survey. We also ask that members encourage their library directors to complete the questionnaires by August 1.

The survey will be carried out in complete confidentiality by Association Research, Inc., a professional research firm in Rockville, Maryland, that works exclusively with nonprofit organizations.

The 2011 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be available for purchase and shipment in October; $110 for AALL members and $175 for nonmembers. The final report will also be available on AALLNET free of charge to members only. The Association is accepting advance orders by email at orders@aall.org, by fax at 312/431-1097, or by calling AALL Headquarters at 312/205-8022.

AALL's Discussion Lists Migrate to My Communities Aug. 1

As part of AALL's new website design, you now have more tools for communicating and networking with all of your AALL colleagues. To maximize these new features, AALL will migrate from its current discussion list platform to the new, enhanced eGroups on the My Communities platform on August 1 (download the AALL My Communities Quick Start Users' Guide for detailed information about how to use My Communities).

If you are currently a member of an AALL committee or special interest section (SIS), effective August 1, you will begin to receive all of your discussion list messages via the new eGroups. Committees and SISs are synced with our membership database, so you will automatically be added to your respective communities.

If you are a member of a caucus, you will need to join your caucus to begin receiving the eGroup messages.

To access your eGroups, you must first sign in to AALLNET. Then go to My Communities; be sure to look at the "Getting Started" box on the homepage. Here you'll find information about accessing all of the new functions available.

Most importantly, adjust your subscription settings to customize how you will receive your discussion list messages. Currently, the default setting is "daily digest," but you may opt to receive notifications in "real time," "PDA" (real time, but in plain text format for mobile devices), "no emails" (receive messages only by logging into My Communities), or "unsubscribe" from the community altogether.

Annual Meeting Educational Program Handout Materials on AALL2go

This year's educational program handout materials are now available on AALL2go. Once again, you can view and print the handout materials for the programs you plan to attend in Philadelphia, before you even get there. Later this summer, you'll be able to access the recordings of the great programs in this year's lineup – stay tuned for more information. Please note that files were solicited, but not necessarily received for all programs. Additional materials may be provided on site by the programs' speakers, and on AALL2go after the conference. Get the most out of your Annual Meeting experience – before you even leave home!

The Future of AALL and Law Librarianship

An AALL Futures Summit will be held this fall in Chicago to enlist the membership in planning for the future of both the profession and the Association. One of President-elect Darcy Kirk's initiatives, the Summit Planning Committee is chaired by David Mao. The committee will develop the agenda for the summit, designed to create a discussion about the challenges of the environment in which law librarians work. Members invited to attend the summit will discuss how AALL can best meet members' needs as the nature of librarianship and information management is rapidly changing. Mao will host a "Coffee Talk" during the upcoming Annual Meeting on Tuesday morning. Please join in on the conversation and provide your comments that morning.

Gallagher and Hall of Fame Awards Presented at AALL Business Meeting

New this year, AALL will present the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award and the Hall of Fame Award during the AALL Business Meeting on Monday, July 25, at 3:45 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate the impressive achievements and service of seven of our colleagues: Gallagher winners Laura N. Gasaway, Frank G. Houdek, and Kathleen Price; and Hall of Fame inductees Timothy L. Coggins, Anne W. Grande, Nancy P. Johnson, and Jacquelyn J. Jurkins.

House Appropriations Committee Approves Legislative Branch Cuts

On July 13, the House Appropriations Committee approved funding for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 Legislative Branch appropriations bill. The bill provides $575 million for Library of Congress, an 8.5 percent decrease from FY 2011, and $113 million for the Government Printing Office (GPO), a 16.3 percent decrease from FY 2011. The Senate Appropriations Committee has not yet considered its version of the bill. AALL will continue to monitor progress on this important appropriations bill.

2010 AALL Price Index for Legal Publications Now Available

The 2010 AALL Price Index for Legal Publications is now available on AALLNET. The table-based report includes details for the mean cost of titles and percentage increases over previous years for serial publications, legal periodicals, loose-leaf services, commercially published court reporters, and supplemented treatises.

The purpose of the Price Index is to provide members with comparative information about past price changes in order to help with budgeting and collection development decisions. In gathering information for the Price Index, the committee asks publishers to provide their pricing. If a publisher declines to do so, its pricing is not included in the index.

New Law Student Research Competencies Task Force

Executive Director Kate Hagan recently appointed a Law Student Research Competencies Task Force to develop law student research competencies based on the Law Student Research Principles approved by the Executive Board at its spring meeting. The charge to the task force is to draft measurable competencies for legal research instruction based on each of the five research principles developed by the Law Student Research Competency Standards Task Force. The current task force will complete its work and issue a final report and recommendations to the Executive Board for its summer 2012 meeting. The chair of the task force, Carol Bredemeyer, will host a "Coffee Talk" during the upcoming Annual Meeting on Tuesday morning. Please join in on the conversation and provide your comments that morning.

Grant Recipients Announced

AALL/BNA Continuing Professional Education Grant recipients for this round include the Western Pacific Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries for "Comparing AACR2 and RDA" and the Academic Law Libraries Special Interest Section for a program on Legal Project Management. The deadline for the next round of grants will be September 12.

AALL 2012 Call for Proposals

It's not too soon to start thinking about programming at next year's Annual Meeting. The 2012 Call for Proposals has been announced, and the 2012 Annual Meeting Program Committee wants to hear from you. Check out the new Annual Meeting Program Ideas online community to share ideas about programs you'd like to see in Boston or to get inspired by someone else's idea. The 2012 Call for Proposals deadline is September 15.

Member News

Beth Adelman was named the new director of the University of Buffalo Law Library. Adelman was previously the associate director and head of collection development. TerrenceMcCormack, the head of the Koren Center for Clinical Legal Education, was appointed as associate director.

Melissa Beck, a librarian at the UCLA School of Law Hugh & Hazel Darling Law Library, has been named the 2011 Librarian of the Year by the Librarians Association of the University of California, Los Angeles. This award recognizes excellence in librarianship, particularly as it furthers the teaching and research mission of UCLA, and meets the intellectual, informational, and cultural needs of the university community. Beck was recognized for her leadership, innovation, and creativity in single handedly creating, implementing, and reviewing a systematic approach to cataloging and tracking electronic resources in the law library.

Chief Justice John Roberts had some nice words recently on the last day of the term about Supreme Court Librarian Judith Gaskell's retirement and the support the library provides the Court: "The Court also notes today that the Court's Librarian, Judith Gaskell, has announced her retirement. She will be leaving us before we reconvene in the fall. Ms. Gaskell has served as the Court's Librarian since 2003. In the earliest years, the Court did not have its own Library. Members of the Court used their own personal collections or borrowed books from the Library of Congress or other sources. Today, the Librarian manages the Court's splendid collection of more than 500,000 volumes, directs a staff of 28, and provides irreplaceable research in support of our work. The Court thanks you, Ms. Gaskell, for your dedicated service, and we wish you well in your retirement."

Sarah Glassmeyer was named the new director of content development at the Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI), effective August 15. She is currently faculty services and outreach librarian at Valparaiso University Law School Library.

Oregon State Law Librarian Joe Stephens retired at the end of June.
