Happy May! Warm weather and fully leafed trees point to the coming of summer. And summer reminds us that the Annual Meeting is now just 10 weeks away! Be sure to register by June 15 to receive the early bird discount. This year's meeting has more to offer than ever before, including Coffee Talks, a new Association Luncheon (don't forget to register separately for the luncheon), and great workshops that are filling up fast! Consider becoming a blogger at the Annual Meeting to help us share the news of this great event.

Editors for both Spectrum and Law Library Journal are stepping down at the end of their terms in summer 2013. This is a great opportunity to take on an editorship of one of these two publications. Applications will be accepted until June 1, and interviews will be conducted at the Annual Meeting.

Finally, keep your AALL membership up to date. Make sure you have renewed for next year and that your AALLNET profile is correct. Upload a picture, and fill in those blanks on the form. Other members refer to this information, and it helps all of us stay connected.

Live, from Boston... It's the AALL Annual Meeting and Conference!

Once again, AALL will webcast three programs from the Annual Meeting, and you can help select two of them. (The first webcast program will be Sunday's Keynote Session with Richard Susskind.) Cast your vote online by Monday, June 11, for the programs you'd most like to see - one on Monday and one on Tuesday.

Whether you're attending our conference in Boston or tending to your job back at the office, you can be part of the audience. Selected programs will be announced in next month's e-newsletter, along with instructions for accessing these programs in July. Archived recordings of these programs will be available free to members after the conference through AALL2go, your online center for professional development.

Calling All Bloggers: Join AALL in Boston!

Countless stories unfold every day at the AALL Annual Meeting and Conference, and we welcome AALL member bloggers to volunteer to help us cover the news and events as they occur in Boston.

Dedicated space with wifi and power outlets will be reserved for our volunteer bloggers in program rooms. AALL will publicize the blogs to the membership before and during the conference. And bloggers will receive an "AALL Blogger" badge ribbon onsite so conference attendees can interact with them in person as well.

Action Alert: Help Save the American Community Survey

On May 10, the House of Representatives voted in favor of major programmatic cuts to the U.S. Census Bureau in the Fiscal Year 2013 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 5326). These cuts will prevent the Census Bureau from conducting the annual American Community Survey and the 2012 Economic Census, which provide key demographic, social, economic, and housing information to policymakers, business and community leaders, and researchers. A Senate vote is expected soon, so please take action now to ask your senators to protect these important research tools.

Coffee Talks Provide Networking Opportunities

Everybody knows that the Annual Meeting provides innumerable opportunities to network and learn from other colleagues - and here's one more. To keep the conversation flowing in Boston, informal Coffee Talk discussions will again be held on Tuesday morning. You can brainstorm, sound off, and share your challenges, experiences, and ideas while strengthening ties to your professional community.

Have a burning question you'd like to ask? Maybe you'd like to pick your colleagues' brains about a new innovation. Wondering if anybody has dealt with the same situation you find yourself in now? We're looking for great table topics to keep you buzzing all day. Send your ideas to annualmeeting@aall.org by June 1, and stay tuned for more details closer to the Annual Meeting.

Submit Resolutions and Questions for the Business Meeting and Members Open Forum in Boston

The AALL General Business Meeting will be held July 23 at 4:15 p.m. during the Annual Meeting in Boston. It will be followed immediately by the Members Open Forum, which will adjourn no later than 5:30 p.m.

Any member who wants to submit a resolution for consideration by the membership at the Business Meeting must do so by July 2. Resolutions can be submitted by any AALL entity or member concerning substantive matters.

During this year's Members Open Forum, I and other officers will be available to respond to member questions regarding AALL and its programs and activities. In addition to asking questions from the floor, members can also submit questions in advance of the meeting.

Seeking Spectrum and Law Library Journal Editors

Both AALL Spectrum Editorial Director Mark Estes and Law Library Journal Editor Janet Sinder have notified AALL they will end their terms in the summer of 2013. In preparation for their departures, AALL will conduct a search to fill both positions. The positions are volunteer and include a stipend. The AALL Spectrum editorial director has a three-year term that can be renewed, and the Law Library Journal editor has a five-year term that is also renewable.

Both editors are responsible for determining the editorial content for each issue of the publication for which they serve as editor. This includes generating story ideas, soliciting potential authors, and collaborating with authors to develop their articles. AALL Spectrum is published nine times a year, and Law Library Journal is published quarterly. The editors also serve as ex-officio members of the Law Library Journal and AALL Spectrum Committee.

Qualified candidates must have a bachelor's degree and MLS and/or JD; demonstrated ability as a writer and/or editor; excellent communication and negotiation skills; substantial experience in the law library profession; and membership in AALL with a record of involvement and active participation.

Applications will be accepted until June 1, and interviews will be conducted at the Annual Meeting in Boston. To help with the transition, the candidate selected as AALL Spectrumeditorial director will begin in early 2013, working with Estes until July 2013, and the candidate selected as Law Library Journal editor will begin in September 2012, working with Sinder until July 2013.

AALL Connects with Legal Administrators

Last month, April 22-26, AALL was represented at the Association of Legal Administrators Annual Conference in Honolulu. AALL's representative to ALA, Monice Kaczorowski, director of library services at Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP in Chicago, and AALL Director of Membership Marketing and Communications Julia O'Donnell staffed an exhibit booth at the conference, where they talked to ALA members about the changing role of law librarians in law firms. They handed out information about AALL and the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section Resource Guides, which were very well received by administrators.

They also participated in networking events with ALA members and a strategic alliance meeting with representatives from ALA, the International Legal Technology Association, the Legal Marketing Association, and NALP, the Association for Legal Career Professionals. Kaczorowski and O'Donnell made many valuable connections at the conference and plan to follow up with more opportunities to collaborate with ALA members on education and publishing.

AALL's Career Center recently added Career Tips, a free database of articles on job hunting, interview and negotiation techniques, networking, work-life balance, and other career-related topics. Search by career stage or services you need using keywords or phrases.

Spring Law Library Journal is Available Online

The Spring 2012 issue of Law Library Journal has been published. The issue features articles on copyright, e-licensing and the public library ethos; resource-based learning and course design for teachers of legal research; a law librarians' guide to WikiLeaks; a study of the cancellation of print primary source materials in Canadian academic libraries; and an annotated bibliography on organ donation.





Editors Wanted for Law Library Journal's "Keeping Up with New Legal Titles" Column

After four years as the editors/compilers of Law Library Journal's quarterly book review column, "Keeping Up with New Legal Titles," Creighton Miller, Jr. and Annmarie Zell will end their terms with the final issue of Volume 104. -

Law Library Journal seeks new editors for the column beginning with the Winter 2013 issue. Interested AALL members may apply as individuals or as teams of two or three. To apply, send a writing sample and cover letter explaining why you are interested in the position to Janet Sinder, Law Library Journal editor, by June 10.

AALL2go Pick of the Month

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Challenging Conversations.

Most law librarians will have to deal with challenging conversations throughout their careers. - The ability to productively handle difficult and sometimes emotionally charged communications is a necessary skill for librarians to develop. - This presentation, led by William Lindberg and Pamela McClean from the Ash Grove Group, uses two brief vignettes to illustrate specific strategies and techniques to improve one's ability to handle challenging conversations. - The vignettes are acted out by academic law librarians Brian Baker, Victoria Williamson, and J. Denny Haythorn. A reading list and handout are included with the video presentations.

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the death of Laura Bedard.

Ms. Bedard served as special collections librarian at Georgetown University Law Library in Washington, D.C., until her death. She passed away on May 7.

Member News

On March 30, Patricia Brown assumed her new duties as the interim associate director and head of public services at Barry University School of Law in Orlando. She previously served four years as a reference librarian at Barry, worked at various libraries in Florida and California, and had a long, distinguished career as an attorney specializing in family law.

John P. Joergensen has been appointed director of the law library and professor of law at Rutgers School of Law-Newark . He will succeed Carol Roehrenbeck, who retired after 17 years in the position. Joergenson has served as a librarian at the Law Library at Rutgers-Camden Law School since 1996. His new positions are effective July 1.

Jean O'Grady, library director at DLA Piper in Washington, D.C., and the blogger behind Dewey B Strategic, was quoted by Forbes on May 8.

Camille Reynolds is the new director of risk management and information services at Fenwick & West LLP in San Francisco. - She previously worked at Nossaman LLP in San Francisco since 2001, first as Northern California librarian and most recently as director of knowledge management.

Nathan Rosen recently - published three book reviews in the AJL Review, a book review in Legal Information Alert, and will present a program, Evolving Role of Competitive Intelligence in Legal Marketplace, - at - the - Special - Libraries - Association's - Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO in July.

Donna Williams is the new access and research services librarian at the University of San Francisco School of Law's Dorraine Zief Law Library, effective June 5. She formerly was a law librarian at the California Court of Appeal – 6 th District in San Jose.
